Promising, With a Few Limitations
Newer than intense pulsed light (IPL) and diode laser, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser hair removal offers a fresh approach to a classic dilemma. Unlike its predecessors, it works on carbon instead of melanin, as made possible by it operating at a much higher wavelength (1064nm). This is why a carbon lotion has to be applied onto the area where hair needs to be reduced.
The use of an alternative chromophore makes for a safer procedure, as the skin itself wont heat up due to it containing melanin. And remember, in procedures using IPL, the risk of getting burns is higher among those with dark skin given the pigments increased abundance. This explains why its typically only used on individuals with pale to medium complexion.
But aside from this particular benefit in safety, are there other advantages to using Q-switched Nd:YAG? Also, what downsides should anyone looking for a laser hair removal machine for salon use take into account?
Noticeable Results, Minimal Discomfort
Despite being new, this hair-removal technology has already become the focus of several studies. An article published in Dermatologic Surgery, written by Goldberg, Littler, and Wheeland, points towards Nd:YAG being capable of reducing hair by at least 25 percent from a single treatment. Some of their subjects even had reductions of up to 66 percent after three months.
A study done by a different team (Rogers, Glaser, Siegfried, and Walsh), though released through the same journal, yielded encouraging results in relation to pain. Specifically, they found that compared to alexandrite laser, this carbon-targeting alternative only causes half the discomfort. Still, it needs to be said that alexandrite-based lasers are known for being painful.
In addition to causing less pain, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser hair removal has been shown to trigger fewer side effects when compared to those that rely on older laser-based epilation technologies. The work of Nanni and Alster, as published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, mentions that while side-effects did occur (e.g., crusting, blistering) they were mostly seen on people given ruby or alexandrite laser procedures.
Mixed, Lackluster Results for Fine Hair
When it comes to reducing noticeable hair growth in large areas even for people with dark skin tones, Q-switched Nd:YAG remains among the top choices. Unfortunately, however, the same cannot be said for cases where fine hair (e.g., those on the face) had to be reduced or kept under control, with some people ending up having small patches of darker, longer hair.
This is believed to be, in part, due to certain areas of the skin being more sensitive to hormones. To keep up with the hair growth, more frequent sessions are often recommended (e.g., monthly for up to eight months, with biannual maintenance treatments afterwards). This, of course, leads to increased costs, in addition to requiring more time in total.
Is the Latest Technology Also the Best?
Q-switched Nd:YAG laser hair removal is indeed impressive in a number of ways. But as made clear, it comes with its own set of limitations, much like procedures done using Nd:YAGs predecessors. So, if you are planning to make use of this technology in your own salon, be sure to weigh its pros and cons in relation to your clienteles priorities and expectations.
