Achieve the Best Sound with These Tips
When it comes to speakers, the right environment and placement is vital. Even if you end up getting the most expensive set there is, if you didnt put much thought on how or where its placed in your room, youll end up having a lackluster listening experience. Well, theres no need to worry. Maximize your setups potential by following these tips.
Working Around Walls
Try clapping in a room devoid of everything but walls. What do you get? An echo. Speaker setups wont work to their full potential if the sound theyre making gets bounced back and forth. Even the slightest echoing sound can become infuriating in the long run, and so you either need to find a better room for your home audio or you add things to break the noise.
One of the cheapest of way of doing the latter is by putting drapes, especially the kind that extends down to the floor. Being soft and porous makes them capable of absorbing sound energy, preventing it from being bounced back and thus reducing reverb in the process. Objects with the same qualities (e.g., carpeting) can further help in keeping the echo down.
If you want something that professionals use, then you could opt for acoustic foam instead. Some acoustic foam panels have the added benefit of noise reduction, meaning you could turn up the volume without worrying too much about disturbing other peopleall while ensuring that youre achieving the best possible sound quality with your speakers.
Aligned the Right Way
Aside from making sure that sound doesnt bounce throughout your room, you have to check whether your setup is properly positioned. The first rule of placing audio devices properly is keeping them four to eight feet apart (for bookshelf and floorstanding, respectively), and two feet away from walls to avoid unnecessary reverb as was discussed above.
As for the height, as much as possible, you should aim to keep your setup, or more specifically their tweeters, at the same level as your ears. This shouldnt be too hard to do with floorstanding types. With their bookshelf counterparts, however, this could mean trying to place them on every platform you have in the room and hoping that theres a good match.
Once youve set the correct height, see to it that there isnt anything between you and your speaker setup, all while doing your best to achieve symmetry in how the pieces are positioned (ideally forming a triangle in relation to where your seat is). Theres going to be a bit of trial and error here, so dont be afraid to try out a few tunes between adjustments.
Worthwhile Challenge
Setting up speakers is more involved than configuring other home devices, such as routers. And of course, going for complex, high-end models means that youll be spending more time setting up your home audio. Regardless of the challenges though, you need to do things rightas theres nothing more satisfying than enjoying top notch sound quality in the comfort of your abode.
