In 2013, HP unveiled their Instant Ink subscription service, touting it as a solution to running out of ink and having to repeatedly purchase expensive cartridges. Since then, other companies specializing in printers have followed suit, such as Epson and their ReadyPrint service. Despite the growing popularity of these programs, however, are they really for everyone?
Pay According to Your Usage
In the case of HPs Instant Ink, consumers can choose among five different plans based their budget as well as their printing needs. For inkjet models, the cheapest of these plans only costs 0.99 USD monthly and allows you to print up to 10 pages. Most people though, seem to go for the moderate option, which lets them print up to a hundred pages for 5.99 USD.
Epsons offering is slightly different. To avail of their service, youll have to actually choose among three specific printers that come with the planand yes, these come with true unlimited prints. Their home option, paired with their ET-2750U inkjet printer, is set at 14.99 USD per month. Unfortunately, it seems that the programs availability isnt as guaranteed as HPs.
An Emphasis on Convenience
Regardless of brand, these subscription services are geared towards eliminating the hassle brought about by printers running out of ink and the process of getting a replacement cartridge. This means that whenever your tank or toner is nearing empty, youll be shipped a replacement within a matter of days (e.g., with HPs Instant Ink, this could be a maximum of 10).
It can be said though, that achieving this level of convenience means sacrificing a bit of your privacy. After all, your device will constantly be updating its manufacturer of its status. Another point that needs to be mentioned is that with these programs, you will be stuck to using original cartridges. And with Epsons deal, you wont even own the printer itself.
Anti-Consumer or Strict Rule?
The real downside to these programs, however, stems from the troubles that may arise when deciding to end the subscription. In the context of HP for example, choosing to end it means sending back the cartridge thats presently in your printer. Ink levels dont matter here, and you will have to purchase a new set of cartridges to once again use your printing device.
There are also instances where people had to wait for the billing cycle to end before being able to use their printer. This is despite them having swapped their ink with new ones. Overage fees are another problem limited to HPs and similar programs without unlimited prints. With it, you will be paying extra (e.g., per page) once youve reached your allocated print count.
Should You Really Subscribe?
Printers, like digital photo frames, are devices you expect to be completely yours after paying for them. With these subscription services though, youre losing direct control over your printer in exchange for not having to track ink usage. But, will it be worth it? Is it going to be better than just buying a printer and ink from a trusted retailer? Well, the answers up to you.
