Given the sheer number of digital cameras competing for the hard-earned cash of consumers, things can certainly get confusing for first-time buyers. Well, fortunately, there is a good way of simplifying this seemingly impossible searchand its by limiting your choices to the three biggest brands today in terms of market share, namely Nikon, Sony, and Canon.
Nikon: Slice of Camera History
Founded way back in the early 1900s, Nikon continues to make cameras that are praised for their image quality, durability, and overall performance. This isnt surprising though, as their engineering and production remains among the best in the industry. And yes, they have offerings for hobbyists and professionals alike, with prices ranging from 160 to 3,000 USD.
This isnt to say that Nikon is perfect. Some of their recent decisions have led consumers to question the brands priorities. For one, they put an end to their authorized third-party repair program, meaning you have no other choice but to send your camera back for repairs. But despite these issues, Nikon remains a popular choice and accounts for 13.7 percent of the market.
Sony: A True Sensor Specialist
There is no denying that Sony is among the most well-known brands worldwide, and their cameras have claimed 22.1 percent of the market in 2021. The brand is mostly focused on their work in mirrorless camera technology (an area in which they have the most experience), though their acquisition of Minolta gave them the opportunity to try their hand at making their very own SLRs.
What really places Sony among the top brands in photography, however, are their image sensors. These so above the competition that even Nikon themselves have been discreetly using them in their own DSLRs (e.g., Nikon Z7, D100, D5500). Still, enthusiasts do not usually give Sony as their first recommendation, believing that Nikon and Canon are more well-rounded.
Canon: The Undisputed Leader
Holding roughly half of the global digital camera market is no small feat, and Canon has continuously managed to do just that despite the intense competition. Like Nikon, they are a pioneer in digital photography, and its them who made the first fully electronic camera system during the late 1980s. It was also Canon that first developed amateur-friendly DSLRs.
In 2015, the company unveiled two new models, the EOS 5DS and its 5DSR variant, both boasting a 50MP pixel count and capable of continuous shooting at five frames per second. Like any other brand, however, Canon still has downsides associated with them, such as their less-than-ideal positioning of certain controls and their use of in-house terms for features.
So Which Brands Your Choice?
Nikon, Sony, or Canongiven all thats been said, which ones your likely pick? Or, were you already looking at cameras made by one of them? Are you thinking of getting one of the latest models that support linking through wireless routers? Well, whichever you end up choosing, given the track record of these manufacturers, youll most likely be pleased with the outcome.
