Are you thinking of going a little more green and growing some of your own plants at home? Thats all well and good, but as noble as that idea may be, you cant sustain plants for more than a couples of weeks if you dont know where to start. So here are a few key tips that you can use so youll have a greater chance of growing a healthy and beautiful garden.
Assess your area before you start getting your supplies for your garden, you need to take a good look at your space. Identify how much space youll have so you know how many you can have. You should also know if its close to a water source or if you need to get a hose; if so, measure how long it needs to be.
Find your lighting if you dont spend much time in your intended garden area, youll need to spend a few days observing which part gets the most sunlight. This is crucial to ensure your plants get the amount of light they need each day. Should your planned spot have fewer hours of sunlight or worse, very little to none at all, then youll need to rethink your plan and relocate to a better spot. Should this be the case, dont be discouraged, think of it as an opportunity to redesign the rest of your space.
Soil quality while many will agree that this is one of the most important factors in gardening, you dont need to necessarily have this at home. If your lawn or backyard has poor soil quality, you can easily buy a couple of bags from your local nursery that will specifically match the plants you want to grow. The point here is, if you dont have fertile soil at home, dont worry about it. But dont use it because that will guarantee an easy death to your plants.
Get to know the plants you want to grow do you want flowers? Vegetables? Herbs? A combination of any of them? Learn about all of them. Make a list of the plants you want and know everything about them: soil type, watering requirement, sun requirement, how long itll take to grow, and how tall or wide its expected to grow. Youll also need to know if theyll be needing support poles or regular trims.
Consider containers if you have limited space and would like to keep a combination of plants of different heights and soil requirements, youll need to segregate them and the easiest and most effective way to do this is to plant them in their own containers and you can mark them accordingly. This will make it easier for you to remember what they need, and give you a greater chance at a successful garden.
While these tips will definitely help you get started, its also important to note that you shouldt bite off more than you can chew. Start small with maybe only a handful of plants. Once youve gained some experience and confidence, then, and only then, should you consider adding some more.
