Camping can be quite exciting. Its a great way to bond with both family and friends. But when you have kids, the prospect of taking them outdoors and actually spend the night becomes a little muddled. Do not despair, there is a way to still enjoy nature even when you have a couple of rugrats in tow. All it takes is a little dose of smart planning and combine it with some creativity and youll be looking forward to memorable time.
Know Your Terrain
Regardless if you have a regular camping spot or if youre new to the camping grounds, it would be ideal if you could have a clear picture of what the terrain will be like. Will you need to hike before you get there? Is it near any bodies of water? A cliff? Knowing the grounds will help you prepare better so you can take the necessary precautions that not only will keep the kids safe, but will also prevent them from getting bored that may lead to whining and endless arguments.
So what do you do depending on the circumstances? Only consider a camping ground near a lake or any body of water if your kids are 1. abled swimmers, or 2. Well-behaved enough to trust them not to wander off on their own. A similar thought process should apply in other situations. Safety takes top priority.
Consider Activities
Traditionally, youll probably think of sitting around the campfire, singing some songs, and roasting marshmallows. These are all great ideas and elements for a memorable experience. But, kids these days arent as easily piqued by these so youll need to think of fresh activities that you can do together. Heres a few ideas:
Stargazing you can download a few of the constellations on your phone or tablet and have your kids look for them in the night sky. Theyll use the images as references, and you can trace them to show them how those shiny dots connect and become a logical symbol. You can look up fun facts that will pique their interest, and maybe even get them started with a love for wonders of space.
Be like cavemen no, you dont need to wear loincloths nor sharpen your spears, but you can show them how people started technology and how they survived without all our lives luxuries nowadays. Teach them how to start a fire without using a lighter or charcoal. Find dry twigs, dry leaves, and grass that can help start your fire. If you dont know how to do this either, then itll be even more fun taking turns until one of you actually gets it done.
Know their Expectations
Before you even start packing your supplies, ask your kids what they expect during the trip. Get them involved with the planning process so they have something to look forward to. This will also let you know what you should and should not bring. You might even learn more about your kids and they can even give you fresh ideas.
