Should You Stay Basic or Go Surround?
So your speakers no longer work. While you know that theyll have to be replaced as quickly as possible, youre also fully aware that this could be a chance to get something better. But is there really any point in going for five- or even seven-channel setups, or will you be just as satisfied with a more basic configuration? And, how big is your budget going to be?
Of Prices and Expectations
If youre on a limited budget, say less than 50 dollars, then youre going to have to choose among the simpler options. Youll be glad to know though, that you can buy a functional audio device for as little as 10 dollars. But these are no-name multimedia (2.0) solutions that plug into a USB port, so you really cant expect much from them.
If you have a bit more to spare, you could go for similarly modest options but from reputable brands instead, like Logitech and Edifier. These will set you back around 30 to 40 dollars and will mostly be AC powered, but they will definitely sound clearer than their bottom-of-the-barrel counterpartsespecially once you turn up the volume.
If theres still room in your budget and you want a better listening experience, you could opt for 2.1 systems instead. These have their own subwoofers and are a superior choice if you find yourself frequently listening to music. Simple 2.0 systems cant handle bass tones and a 2.1 config is needed if you want to reveal all the sounds in your favorite tracks.
Towards the Top of the Line
Unlike digital photo frames, there is a wide array of speakers separated into various price categories. Above the hundred-dollar range (anywhere from 100 to 1,000 USD), you will find 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems. These are usually added to home theater setups, but they can be hooked up to a computerassuming that it has all the right ports, of course.
Although these configurations generally sound even better than 2.0 and 2.1 systems, their main appeal lies in providing directional audio through the additional satellites that they come with. This means, however, that youll need more space in order to set them up properly, and that they wont do well if youre in a cramped room.
Theres also the challenge in positioning each piece of the system, testing them individually and as a whole, and then hiding the cables that run along each of the satellites backs. Still, if you have the space, budget, and patience required, aside from really wanting the very best for your listening pleasure, then these high-end solutions should be worth it.
Theres Something for Everyone
Speakers vary greatly. There are pairs specifically made for the budget conscious, and there are setups crafted for true audio connoisseurs. Also, there are configurations that try to strike a balance between quality and price. Basically, this means that as long as you know what you need or want and how much you can spend, finding that perfect setup will be easy.
