Much like routers or any other modern device, printers come in all shapes and sizes. But what if youre only looking to get one for use at home? Well, your search shouldnt be too complicated and you wont have to examine every model available, assuming youre only looking for something suited for everyday use. In fact, youll just have to check for these features:
Paper Formats and Types
Dont expect that a printer can support all common paper sizes. At the very least though, A4 seems to be the standard and most popular. Its what budget printing solutions are generally capable of using. Letter and legal sizes, despite having little difference from A4, arent as widely supported. The same can be said for smaller formats, like B5.
So, if youre eyeing a particular printer, do make sure to check its specifications sheet to determine its supported sizes. Also, if you arent only going to print documentssay youre thinking of occasionally printing photos or doing other fun projectssee to it that the one youre getting has a wide array of supported paper types (e.g., photo, glossy, sticker, transfer).
Price and Recurring Costs
If youre on a limited budget, it may seem like a wise choice to go for the cheapest printer youll find. Unfortunately, in the case of these devices, a low upfront cost doesnt necessarily translate to being the most economical. Printers, after all, need to have their cartridges replaced in order to keep producing prints.
With this in mind, you should look into the price of a given models cartridges. Find out whether theyre priced similarly to those of comparable models, but dont forget to also take the estimated number of prints into account. In addition, it would make sense to determine whether the cartridges can work individually or are forcibly bundled together.
Going with Inkjet or Laser
One last thing to consider as you shop for your next printer is whether youll benefit more from inkjet or from laser. If you find yourself printing documents most of the time, and its something you do several times a day, then you will probably appreciate how economical laser printers are. Laser is also a great choice if you print rarely, say once or twice yearly.
The reason for this is that lasers cartridges are resistant to drying up unlike their inkjet counterparts. If, however, youre going to print at least monthly and youre more concerned about the quality of colored prints, then inkjet should be the superior choice. Although there is such a thing as color laser, it still isnt capable of matching inkjets gallery quality output.
Make the Best Investment
Now that you have a better understanding of what to look for, you should be able to make a sound decision as you browse the printing devices within your budget. Remember not to be hasty even if youre pressed for time. A mistake in choosing among printers could prove to be costly down the line, and may even necessitate that you make another purchase way too soon.
