Why You Shouldnt Focus Solely on Size
Many cell phones are aimed towards the budget segment, all claiming to have features youll only normally find on higher end models. In particular, theres this trend of adding displays that are essentially just as big as those of pricier phones. While more screen real estate is always welcome, its wrong to assume that these cheap models offer the same visual experience.
Scrutinizing Screens
Heres one example: Xiaomi, a fast-rising brand thats currently fourth most popular worldwide, has a model called Redmi 9A. Despite being priced at only a little more than 100 USD, it sports a 6.53-inch screenputting it at roughly the same size as the Xiaomi 11T Pros 6.67 inches. The latter, of course, is much pricier, positioned at approximately 600 USD.
At a quick glance, these displays do look similar. However, once you inspect them closely, youll realize just how big the gap is. In terms of brightness alone, the 11T Pros screen is more than double the 9As. Then, theres also the massive difference in resolution and pixel density, making the 11T Pros display much clearer and a lot crisper than that of the budget phone.
While theres nothing wrong with low-end cell phones having some of the biggest screens on the market, you shouldnt expect them to be of the same quality as their more expensive counterparts. But of course, that isnt to say there arent any low-cost models with unusually large screens while boasting quality thats above whats expected for their given price point.
Cost of Performance
Say youve spotted a budget phone that features a QHD display. Does it mean youve struck gold and that you should immediately spend your hard-earned money on it? Well, it depends. The main difference between cheap and expensive phones, no matter how similar they may look, is their chipset. And yes, budget phones are generally equipped with weak chipsets.
If youre only after reading on your phone, or even if youre mainly into streaming shows and movies, then a weak chipset coupled with a high-resolution display should meet and exceed your expectations. On the other hand, if you want your low-end device to sufficiently run games with 3D graphics, then that bigger, higher-res screen will prove to be a problem.
Running at a higher resolution requires more from a chipset than running at a low resolution would. So, a game may run fine on LGs W41, with it having an HD+ display, but would stutter on Xiaomis Redmi 9 Activ due to it being FHD+. And as youve guessed, both these models are equipped with the same Mediatek Helio G35 chipset and has the same amount of RAM.
Consider Your Needs
When it comes to cheap cell phones with big displays, you wont run out of choices. But as youve learned, finding the right model shouldnt only be about searching for the one with the biggest screen. After all, these arent mere digital photo frames. Display size is part of a balancing act among important factors like brightness, resolution (which influences clarity and detail), and overall performance.
