Why Numbers Dont Matter Much
Back in the early 90s, digital cameras were these fascinating new devices that, unless you were going for the high end, barely managed to get shots that compare to those taken using film. Now though, except for a few niche products, film barely exists in the consumer market. And digital has indeed become the standard choice.
But despite the advances in camera technology, people still seem to focus far too much on one particular factormegapixels. Well, it may have been a good way of comparing digicams back in the day when pixel count was only starting to grow. But currently, the huge numbers that represent it no longer seem to matter as much.
But What Is a Megapixel?
A megapixel is equivalent to a million pixels (or, in other words, dots) in an image. And so, the rating for it thats often put in writing on the cameras themselves represent the maximum number of pixels that can be achieved. For example, a camera rated at 12MP has a pixel resolution of 4247 x 2826, which when multiplied with one another translates to 12,002,022.
The rule of thumb here is, the higher the megapixel rating the better the print quality, but only up to a certain size. Now heres the first reason why the number of pixels wont matter as much for most buyerseven at 5MP, a best quality print at 6 x 9 inches can already be achieved. Thats already larger than the standard size of an actual printed photo.
With 16MP cameras, youll be able to comfortably churn out prints at 10 x 15 inches. This size matters less if youre only planning to post images online. Aside from people not really zooming in to see every fine detail with each photo they come across, theres also the fact that most platforms tend to compress and resize images to get more from existing server capacity.
How Quality Is Determined
Moving back a bit, the term best quality is rather subjective as it only refers to what a particular digicam can do. It doesnt mean that all digital imaging devices rated at 12MP get equally clear, colorful, and detailed photos at that resolution. Factors like sensor technology, shutter speed, and low light performance all matter more in this aspect.
Sensors come in two types, namely charge-coupled device (CCD) and complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS). The latter is newer and expectedly produces better color and sharpness. As for shutter speed, it determines whether youll be able to take clear images of moving objects. Speeds of at least 1/125 and up to 1/500 should be ideal in most cases.
Low-light performance refers to how well a camera can take photos at night or in low-light conditions. This is something that often separates cheaper models with those in the mid to high end. Still, if youre going to use your device to take photos of special dinners and nighttime trips, youll want it to have good low-light performanceregardless of its megapixel rating.
The Search for True Quality
Now that you know all that, do you have cameras in mind that will meet your needs and expectations? Or maybe, are you thinking of just purchasing a phone thats equipped with a good enough sensor? Well, whatever you end up choosing, once you have a new camera, shopping for digital photo frames might be a good next step.
