According to the World Health Organization(WHO), good health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.
* But, what is it that makes some people healthy and others unhealthy?
* In what ways can we create a societal framework where everybody have the opportunity to live a long healthy lifestyle?
One of the core aim of the healthy people 2020 is to address this issue in the following ways:
* Creating plans that help to address the relationship between health status and biology, individual behavior, health services, social factors, and policies.
* Intensifying efforts on ecological approach to disease prevention and health promotion. An ecological approach focuses on both individual level and population-level determinants of health and interventions.
Determinants of health deals with a range of personal, social, economic, environmental factors that influence your health status.
Determinant of good health fall under several broad categories that are; * Health policies, * Social environment, * Health services, * Individual behavior, * Biology and Genetics.
The relationships between each of these factors is what determine personal and population health. As a result of this, interventions that target numerous determinants of good health are most likely to be effective. Determinants of good health reach beyond the boundaries of traditional health care and public health sectors; sectors like education, housing, transportation, agriculture, and environment can be important allies in improving population health.
* Health policies at local, state and federal levels effect individual and population health. Increasing taxes on beverages and tobacco for instance, can help in improving the population's health by reducing the number of individuals consuming excess beverages(sugar) and tobacco.
* Social environment is also a determinant of good health, because this reflects the social factors and physical conditions of the environment where an individual is born, live, learn, play, work and age. Also known as social and physical determinants of health, they impact a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes.
* Health care services accessibility and quality of health services can impact health. Lack of access, or limited access, to health services greatly impacts an individual's health status. For instance, when an individual does not have health insurance, they are likely to participate in preventive care and are more likely to delay medical treatment. Barriers to accessing health services include; * Lack of availability, * High cost, * Lack of insurance coverage, * Limited language access.
These barriers to accessing health services lead to; * Unmet health needs, * Delay in receiving right healthcare, *Inaccessible preventive services, * Preventive hospitalization.
* Individual Behavior also plays a major role in determinants of good health. For instance, if an individual stops smoking, his or her risk of developing heart disease is greatly reduced.
A lot of public well-being and healthcare interventions focus on changing individual behavior such as substance abuse, diet and physical activity. Positive changes in individual behavior can reduce the rates of chronic disease in the country. Examples of individual behavior determinants of good health include: * Diet, * Physical activity, * Alcohol, Cigarette, and other drug use, * Hand washing.
Biology and Genetics factors affect specific populations more than others. For example, older adults are biologically prone to being in poorer health than adolescents due to the physical and cognitive effect of aging.
Sickle cell disease is a common example of a genetic determinant of health. Sickle cell is a condition that people inherit when both parents carry the gene for sickle cell. Instances of biological and genetic social determinants of health include; * Age, * Sex, * HIV status, and inherited conditions like anemia, hemophilia, sickle cell and cytic fibrosis and some gene and family history.
