Earning an IAPP certification will open many avenues for career advancement. However, preparing to pass the certification exam is an expensive and time-consuming process. Fortunately, there are ways that you can study more efficiently to make the process easier.

An Overview of the Exam

Before you begin studying, it might be helpful to understand what the certification test is like. Basically the test for all three certifications consists of 90 multiple-choice questions (85 for the CIPM exam. You are given 150 minutes to complete the test and must score at least 300 points (out of a total 500) in order to pass.

The test can be taken at a testing center or on your own computer. With either option, a proctor supervises you to avoid cheating and ensure the exam is taken properly. Note that test slots for both options are provided based on the availability of a proctor, so make sure to schedule in advance so you�ll have sufficient time to prepare.

There are two types of questions:

Factual questions that test your knowledge of the subject matter.
Scenarios that test how you would apply the relevant legislation or the principles of privacy in a given situation.

When going through the test, you have the option to flag answers, so you can review these later after you have answered the last question. Try to finish the test as quickly as possible so you have the time to review your answers.

How to Study

There are many options available to help you prepare for the exam. The IAPP provides both the Body of Knowledge and the Exam Blueprint so you�ll know what topics will be covered in the test. The Exam Blueprint is particularly helpful since it tells you the minimum and maximum number of questions under each subject area. Important note: since the IAPP periodically updates these resources, make sure that you refer to the most updated version. The old and new versions are both available on the site.

Aside from these resources, you can also buy access to an online training platform from the IAPP. While this is expensive, you have access to the platform forever, which allows you to periodically refresh your knowledge as needed. If you avail of online training, you are also provided with textbooks, which are also available separately on the IAPP store.

The IAPP recommends that you take at least 30 hours to prepare for the exam, but you will probably need to study for longer to ensure that you pass. While you can take the test multiple times, each attempt comes with a hefty fee. Subsequent tries cost less, but you will have to wait one month between tests.

The IAPP also provides sample questions with online training or you can purchase these from them. Some websites also provide sample questions for free. As part of your preparation, you should complete these a week or two before you actually take the test, and then review the results. This will help you identify weak spots that you may need to brush up on.

Earning an IAPP certification is one of the most challenging things you will do in your life. But when you pass you will have gained essential knowledge that will enable you to excel in your chosen field and open many new intellectual horizons.
