Emotional competence and emotional intelligence are terms that are usually interchanged. In many instances, you can use one term for another but just remember that there are still subtle differences between them.
Just like any type of competencies, emotional competence is a skill that can be learned. Experts suggest that increasing it is important if you want to be professionally successful.
Consider the following tips.
Tip #1Assertive Communication
Assertiveness refers to a confident behavior that is appropriately forceful. It also means being frank about how you feel, need, or want. It may be a forceful way to express your thoughts and emotions but it is still respectful and not abusive.
When you compose your sentences, you should use brevity. Be direct to the point but dont use an accusing tone when you speak. You need to speak up to be heard but dont sound like youre angry or guilty. Your goal is to be heard clearly and not to startle anyone with the sound of your voice.
You should also mind your body language when you communicate with other people. Use an open stance where you face the person or people youre talking to. Your arms should stay at your sides and your chest pushed out.
This is a show of openness compared to having your arms crossed in front of you with your back hunched. When you talk to others you should consider the opinions of others and try to include everyone in the conversation.
Tip #2Practice Active Listening
Conversations are like two-way streets. People should take turns when they speak. Both sides engaged in conversation should seek to understand one another and then use appropriate ways to make the other person understand.
Active listening also means that you will take note of the topics being discussed. If there are certain points that are unclear, you should ask pertinent questions to clarify your understanding.
Avoid listening only to look for points that you can argue.
Tip #3Stop Reacting, Start Responding
It is very easy to just react to an emotional situation. Its easier to yell at another rather than taking the time to be patient and try to understand what the other person is saying.
Stop yourself from doing anything when you feel a burst of emotion coming on when an incident occurs . Take a few seconds to breathe and then identify how you feel. Tell yourself exactly how you feelangry, stressed, uncomfortable, confused, afraid etc.
After acknowledging how you feel, accept it. And then decide how you should react in the most respectful manner. Acting appropriately and respectfully is a moral victory especially when youre faced with criticism and spite.
Tip #4Empathize with Others
Empathy means putting yourself in another ones shoes. It takes effort to try and understand how the other person sees things. But doing so will give you a huge boost in emotional confidence if you make it a habit.
Tip #5Reach Out, Be Sociable, and Be Approachable
Stop being a grouch and a social outcast . Smile at others and greet people. Take a few minutes to have some small talk even with random strangers you meet at the bar or office.
Improving ones emotional competence will require some practice and consistency. However, the effort is well-worth it because the payback is is truly immense.
