Its often said that your hair is your crowning glory. A simple change in haircut, style, or color can greatly affect your overall look.
With how often you style your hair, you might be wondering if your crowning glory is still at its best. So here are 3 health tips on how to keep healthy hair.
#1: Dont Over-wash Your Hair.
Sweat, sebum, and unpleasant smells like cigarette smoke can stick to your hair. Its why you race to the showers and shampoo away to keep your hair squeaky clean, right?
If you think all that washing is doing wonders to your hair, think again. Over-washing can be more damaging to the hair. Its because hair is at its weakest when its wet, and you scrubbing at it while its wet is making it more prone to hair breakage.
Too much shampooing in itself isnt healthy for your scalp. Shampoo strips the hair and scalp of sebum. This natural oil, sebum, is what keeps hair healthy.
What you can do is to skip washing your hair whenever possible. If your hairs too oily to be left alone, you can opt for dry shampoos. They can get rid of excess sebum without you having to wet your hair.
#2: Comb and Brush Your Hair Before Showering.
Sometimes hair can get so impossibly tangled during and after a shower that you run a comb through it right after you step out of the shower. But remember about hair being at its weakest when wet? Combing hair while its still wet will be sure to break quite a few strands.
Many hair health tips will tell you to comb or brush while your hair is still dry, before showering. That should get rid of any knots or tangles before you start wetting your head.
After showering, let your hair dry before even attempting to comb through it. Resist even running your fingers through your locks. Even combs with the widest teeth can still cause breakage.
#3: Condition and Moisturize.
Because shampoo strips off sebum from the scalp and hair shaft, its important to make sure you bring back all the moisture and oil thats lost. This is so your scalp and hair wont be too dry and brittle.
Conditioners contain ingredients like humectants and surfactants that attract water and seal them within. However, sometimes conditioner alone isnt enough to keep your hair healthy.
Using hair oils is another tip on how to keep healthy hair. Because sebum is similar to oil, your hair and scalp can also benefit from hair oils.
Some of the more popular hair oils are coconut oil, argan oil, camellia oil, and sunflower oil. Some oils are more suited to thick, curly hair, while others are more suited to fine, straight hair. You might have to do a bit of road testing to see which oils will nourish your hair without weighing it down.
Lastly, dont overdo it with the products! Conditioners, hair masks, and oils are meant to be used sparingly. Unless youre a princess locked in a tower with miles-long hair, a small coin-sized amount of conditioner should be enough. Concentrate on the ends up to the middle of your hair, then use whats left going up to the roots.
The amount you should use for hair oils should be even less. A few drops should be enough. Rub the oil between your palms and fingers and lightly pat onto almost-dry hair. As with conditioner, concentrate on the ends going up.
Follow these hair health tips to keep your crowning glory truly glorious every day!
