Toddlerhood is known as one of the most difficult stages of parenthood, especially for new moms and dad. Mealtimes are particularly trying. Aside from dealing with a picky eater, theres also establishing healthy eating habits.
But how do you do that with a precocious toddler? Sometimes theyll eat next to nothing, and then go through a phase wanting to eat nothing but crustless sandwich bread.
If you feel like youre at your wits end, dont fret! Try these 3 tips to encourage healthy eating habits for toddlers.
#1: Dont Sweat It.
Take a deep breath, exhale, and let it go (conceal, dont feel). You shouldnt stress about your toddlers eatingor not eatingso much.
Believe it or not, young children are more in tune with their bodies than you think. Theyre learning to self-regulate. This means that eating like starving bears some days and eating next to nothing some days are all normal.
Dont force your child to finish whats on their plate if they dont want to. Youll actually be instilling unhealthy eating habits this way. Forcing your child to eat when they dont want to will teach them to override their satiety instinct, which will lead to weight issues later on.
What you can do: Give your toddler small portions of a variety of foods and let them pick what they want to eat and how much. Its easier to ask for more if they want to than forcing them to clean off their plate. If your child opts not to eat, let them be and try to offer food again later.
#2: Monkey See, Monkey Do.
If you want to develop good eating habits in your children, you should develop them in you first. Kids are more likely to do things they see you doing. This means that if they see you eating a variety of healthy foods like lean meats, fish, fruits, veggies, and whole grains, theyll be more inclined to try them too.
This applies both ways, too. You cant expect to instill healthy eating habits for toddlers if theyre always seeing you eating junk foods like sweets or salty potato chips.
Bottomline, if you want your kids to eat healthy, you should become their role model in that department.
What you can do: Clear your pantry out of any unwanted snacks. Its hard to forbid yourself and your kids not to eat cookies when there are bags of them in your stash.
Instead of displaying chips and other junk foods, display more fruit on the table. This will entice your kids to eat them instead of unhealthy snacks.
Also start making healthier food options. Remember, its your role as parents to provide for your kids, so make sure to serve them healthy meals.
#3: Switch Things Up.
Eggs for breakfast. Sandwiches for lunch. Pasta for dinner. Sometimes you get stuck with meal staples that you argue with your toddler if they ask for waffles for dinner.
But, really, whats the difference? Whether you eat avocado toast for breakfast or as a snack, its still avocado toast. Itll still provide the same nutrients, no matter what time of day you eat it.
The sames true for your kid. So dont make a fuss about it if your kid asks for cereal for dinner. As long as theyre still a balanced diet, switching things is perfectly okay.
What you can do: Make sure you have a couple of food options to offer your child. Let them pick what they want, but save the others and try offering them at another time. Sometimes theyre just not in the mood for fruit for breakfast!
Toddlerhood might be trying for parents, but it can also be the most rewarding time for you and your kid, if you know how to play things right. Avoid adding extra stress to your life by trying these tips for developing healthy eating habits in your kids!
