Maximizing Your Big Screen Television
Getting the biggest television set you can afford wont be enough if your goal is to have the best time as you watch TV. Indeed, it isnt always about the specsthere are other things like calibration, distance, and lighting that you need to tweak for the sake of finding the sweet spot. Dont worry though, as doing all those things wont be too difficult.
Display Calibration
If you have a smart TV with browsing capabilities, finding the correct settings for contrast, sharpness, and brightness is as easy as opening one of those web-based calibration tools (e.g., Lagom) and manually changing your televisions settings as needed. Do you have a basic TV instead? Well, as long as you can play Blu-ray discs, you can practically do the same thing.
Disc-based calibration tools (e.g., Spears and Munsil HD Benchmark) offer a guided approach to screen calibration. Although they basically go through the same things as their web-based counterparts, they typically offer clearer instructions and even provide demos that you can conveniently follow. The downside, of course, is that they arent free.
Fixing the Distance
Aside from tweaking your TVs settings, you have to find the best position to place it in. To do that, first youll need to check your televisions diagonal screen measurement. Say its 70 inches wideyou need to multiply that by 1.5 for the minimum recommended distance and 2.5 for the maximum. So that means you should be sitting 105 to 175 inches away from the screen.
As for the viewing angle, its best kept to around 30 degrees at most, but this number can be affected by the type of display youre using. Television screens equipped with vertical alignment (VA) technology, for example, usually support smaller viewing angles compared to those with in-plane switching (IPS). Plasma, on the other hand, boasts the widest viewing angles.
Work with Lighting
Once youve found the right distance for your home entertainment system, its finally time to focus on lighting. The room where youve put your TV should be neither too bright nor too dark. Finding the right brightness is often as straightforward as getting rid of excess lighting that end up hitting the screen and causing issues with clarity or color accuracy.
As for your room being too dark, or say you want to have that theatre-like feel and choose to turn off the lights while watching, the ideal solution is to add bias lighting. This involves putting a light source behind the TV itself to somewhat offset the brightness coming from the screen. When done properly, this is an effective way of reducing eye strain.
Ideal Configuration
Finding the right configuration is crucial to your viewing pleasure. And as youve learned, it isnt only about exploring your TVs settings. The room youve chosen to put your television in needs to have the right amount of space as well as the right amount of light. And once youve gone through all those things, rest assured that youll have a great time as you watch TV.
