TV Screen Technology: Choosing Between IPS and VA

If you�re in the market for a new television set, you�ve probably encountered the terms �IPS� and �VA�. These are often used as a means to make a particular TV screen more impressive, instead of being labeled as just using liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. But what do they actually mean? Well, it�s time that you find out.
Divergent Evolution
If you�ve seen the first few generations of LCD displays, you know how terrible their viewing angles were. Simply looking from above or even from the side means you�re going to see washed-out colors�assuming that you can see anything at all. It was a blur, literally. It�s because of these limitations that in-plane switching (IPS) was developed.
With IPS, backlighting from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) get filtered in a way that allows for excellent viewing angles. Watching from below or from the side shouldn�t have much difference from sitting right in front of the display. The view from the top tend to lack a bit of brightness, but it isn�t usually an issue. After all, no one sets up their TV below their line of sight.
This doesn�t mean IPS is perfect though, as it tends to struggle in one very important aspect�contrast. And as you�d expect, this is where vertical alignment (VA) really shines. By applying a different approach to filtering LED backlighting, it manages to block off more light and in turn creates much deeper blacks.
If you look at nighttime scene using a VA-equipped television, you�ll notice how lifelike everything is. Most of the sky is kept deep black, while the moon and stars realistically stand out. The same cannot be achieved with IPS. With greater amounts of light being allowed to pass through, the night sky would at worst end up looking somewhat gray.
But of course, this doesn�t necessarily translate to VA being superior to IPS. Viewing a VA display straight on is the only option if you want perfect clarity. Looking at it from above, below, or from the side would yield something barely acceptable�or too dark to be enjoyed. Although to be fair, the colors won�t look washed out at all unlike with old displays.
Choosing Correctly
With both technologies having quite serious limitations, one isn�t really better than the other. It all depends on how you�re going to use your television�or more specifically, how big your room is and from where you�d be viewing the screen. For example, if your home entertainment system is placed directly in front of your couch and is fairly close to it, you most probably need a VA.
That way, you�ll enjoy VA�s incredible contrast without having to worry about poor viewing angles. On the other hand, if you watch TV in a spacious room and there are other people who�d have to look at the TV screen at an angle, an IPS display would be perfect. Going with a VA-equipped television would likely lead to a poor experience for your family and friends.
