Before Browsing an Online TV Shop
At last, youve decided to get a new big-screen television. And the first thing that came to your mind is seeing whether there are any good deals on that online TV shop you saw.
But as you soon realized, televisions no longer come in a single kindand all sorts of weird terms are used to describe the technology theyre equipped with. Finding the best television set means youll have to familiarize yourself with such technologies.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
TVs that make use of LCD technology rely on liquid crystals to produce images. These crystals are carefully lined up on the display itself, and are placed in front of a light source. The crystals obstruct the light coming from the source, which in turn allows for specific colors to be produced. These colors, when grouped together, form the picture on the television.
The first LCD televisions made use of cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) as backlighting. Though this backlighting solution would eventually be outclassed, it still enabled LCD TVs to surpass televisions that make use of cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Compared to bulky, power-hungry CRT televisions, LCD-equipped displays were slim and show greater efficiency.
Light-Emitting Diode (LED)
Most of todays TVs no longer make use of CCFL. Instead, they have LED backlighting. Unlike CCFL, LEDs are way smaller, making it possible to design even slimmer displays. As for power efficiency, well, LEDs are up to 50 percent more efficient than their CCFL counterparts. This also means that the former produce less heat and so, typically last longer.
The most important distinction, however, lies in image quality. With LEDs being capable of achieving much greater brightness, theyre able to show crisper, more vivid visuals. This, of course, translates to a more satisfying viewing experience. With consumers prioritizing this aspect of TVs, its no wonder that manufacturers have mostly shifted to LED backlighting.
Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED)
Indeed, LED TVs have made CCFL televisions obsoleteand its by surpassing them in every way. Now, what happens when theres another screen technology that overshadows even LEDs? OLED displays make use of organic compounds that light up whenever put in contact with electricity, meaning they dont require backlighting at all.
As you can surely imagine, that means home entertainment systems that rely on OLED screens can be made much more compact, slimmer than the latest LEDs. OLEDs are also a lot more efficient, translating to reduced power consumption and cost. But why havent they dominated the market? Theres one good reason for thattheyre still a lot more expensive to make.
Plasma Display Panel (PDP)
In the early days of high-definition televisions (HDTVs), LCD and PDP duked it out for supremacy. Initially, PDP had better visual quality, though they were often the more premium or expensive choice. As the years passed, LCD technology improved and LED backlighting came into the picture. Soon, PDP only had a slight edge and lost the fight for market dominance.
So Whats Your Pick?
Although LED and OLED televisions are the most common options these days, youll still find all four technologies well represented in any good online TV shop. You still have to think about the qualities of each to make sure that youre getting the best big-screen TV for your budget and needs.
