Your precious child is growing up! They finally have an idea of what academic learnings like.
But theyre still in that in-between phase between playing to learn and studying to learn. How can you guide them through this stage? Here are five tips you can try.
Teach Your Child to Work Independently
Kids around the age of 5 are starting to learn about independence. This is the age where they start to have opinions, likes, and dislikes.
You can encourage this behavior by giving them activities that will have them work independently. You can devote a time in your curriculum where they can work on small HYPERLINK "https://www.amazon.com/GoodyKing-Assorted-Supplies-Crafting-Materials/dp/B082WJKNB8/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=art+supplies+for+school&qid=1590811153&sr=8-5" arts and crafts projects. These activities will encourage your child to be independent and creative.
Teaching your child to work independently like this will prepare them for the more rigorous studying required in higher grade levels. Itll also give you more free time to do chores, ready your next lesson, or focus your attention to your other children.
Have Them Keep a Record of Achievements
This is also the age where kids learn the power of rewards and gratification. A great way to instill hard work for rewards is using a record of achievements.
This is especially useful if youre homeschooling several children. A bit of healthy competition between them wont hurt.
You can use a HYPERLINK "https://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2012/09/elementary-daily-learning-notebook.html" learning journal so your child will have a visual record of all the things theyve learned throughout the schoolyear.
Gradually Increase Study Periods
If youve been homeschooling your child since preschool, youll have an idea of how long you can keep their attention. More often, kids around the age of 5 wont be able to keep their attention for more than 20 minutes.
As your child goes up a grade level, gradually increase the time of study periods. For example, if youve been doing study periods in 15-minute intervals, try 20 minutes. If youve been doing well with 10-minute intervals, try doing 15.
Take a Break and Socialize (Safely)
With many families practicing social distancing, it can be hard for kids to go day by day just studying at home. Remember to give your child break days where they can rest and socialize safely. You can do this by scheduling virtual chats with friends and family.
Kids can get burned out just as you do. If its applicable, take them outdoors for short periods so they wont be cooped up inside the house for weeks at a time.
Step Back and Enjoy Learning
Sometimes you can get so focused on making sure your child learns his studies that you forget to be their parent. You should enjoy learning with your child, because with this you can truly appreciate homeschooling.
Your child will respond positively to this, too. Theyll feel more relaxed and will be more eager for study period than if you were a strict disciplinarian.
Homeschooling elementary school children can be tough, but the rewards are sure worth it. With consistency and organization, youll be able to enjoy teaching your child.
