Homeschooling for high school is a whole new ball game. Students at around this age are generally more mature, which means they are likely to have better study habits. They are also more independent and should be encouraged to take more responsibility for their education. However, they also require more stimulation. Now, during difficult times when you need to keep your children safe (COVID 19 isolation regulations, for example), a curriculum that keeps your student engaged can help.
Heres how you could get started with planning a students high school homeschooling.
1. Know your student
The first step is to plan your students future. Unfortunately, some parents do not know what their kids plan to do in life, or where their interests lie. In addition, your child may not even fully know what he really wants.
Help your student set a path by establishing goals and preparing them for such goals. You can contribute to this by identifying their interests and skills early on and incorporating them to a program. This will also help keep them engaged.
Ask your student about post high school plans. Not everyone has to go to university. Not everyone is interested in getting a college degree. Help your student explore alternatives such as vocational apprenticeship or military service.
2. Know your state requirements
Look up the school attendance and testing requirements for homeschooling in your state. Each state has different laws. Note that many states require curriculum that is comparable to that of a public school.
Some states such as New York, for example, require annual testing only for high school students whereas In Georgia, testing happens in years 3, 6, 9 and 12. Knowing these state requirements is crucial in designing your homeschooling program.
3. Find out what a standard high school education should provide
High school education is meant to get children ready for a career path, or the post-secondary education program they wish to pursue. Consequently, you need to consider the requirements that your student will have to meet in order to acquire a high school diploma or its equivalent, or to get into a college.
Keep in mind that many good colleges have programs with limited slots. So if your students goal is to get in one, you need to know the credits and activities, extracurricular or otherwise, that would give him/her a good chance. Its also important to look up admissions policies for homeschoolers.
4. Explore homeschooling methods
There are generally 4 types of high school homeschooling programs.
Theres the traditional program in which the structure is fairly similar to that of a conventional school setting. Parents pay for curriculum, textbook, and tests and give lessons, quizzes. and assignments. For this, parents can work with an accredited home schooling institution for guidance.
Online homeschool programs, on the other hand, entail giving your child access to pre-recorded videos from which they can learn. Tests are given online as well. This program is administered by an academic advisor, so with this method, the parents job is more of a facilitator or supervisor than a teacher.
The third type is the hybrid learning program in which a combination of online learning programs and traditional programs are used.
The fourth type is the most unconventional. Its not even technically a program. Its called the unschooling and it mostly consists elective classes, extracurricular activities, and internships. When considering this type, make sure that it will not hinder your students post high school education plans.
High school home schooling may seem more complex but with the amount of tools and resources you can get your hands on these days, its worth considering.
