You don't need to carry all of your equipment when you go for a camping trip or when you bug out to escape into places of safety. However, there are critical pieces of survival gear and equipment that you can't go without. You also need to choose a way to store them as you travel.
Critical Survival Gear List
The following are critical pieces of equipment that are deemed necessary no matter what conditions there may be. They include the following:
Proper clothing
Fire starting tools
A survival knife
Whistle
First aid kit
Compass
Duct tape
Nylon cords
Signal mirror
Cooking utensils
Bow saw
Hammer
Sleeping bag and mattress
Waterproof bags
Food packs
Bug Out Storage Options
You will need bug out bags (BOB) to store your survival gear in case you need to leave town and find a safer place to stay . Even though there is no imminent crisis that will require you to leave, having BOB sets ready will bring a certain amount of peace of mind.
Note that these bags can be categorized by weight, which are the following:
Under 20 lbs. – level one equipment and includes any bag with a carrying capacity of 25L. These the ones you use for basic emergencies.
Under 35 lbs. – includes 44 L bags and higher. This is the bag for camping during weekends or even for a week or more.
Under 45 lbs. – this is the full size bag, usually more than 49 L carrying capacity. This is the type of bag for long term tours.
Types of Bags by Design
There are several bag designs that you can choose from. There are folks who may think that a backpack is all there is when it comes to go bags. But there are other available options. Here are the different types of according to design.
Backpack
You can use a standard backpack or maybe a skate backpack. You can also opt for military type packs. These bags are your standard fare for bugging out. They perform extremely well and are easy to wear.
You put them on your back and they get out of your way. Since the weight is on your back, lugging around supplies is easier since you're using most of your body to bear the weight.
Soft-Side Carry Case
These are lightweight bags with one zipper, which puts all your gear within easy reach. The big drawback is that they don't offer a lot of protection for your tools and supplies.
Rigid Carrying Case
This type of bag has metal or plastic sidings. It offers more protection for your belongings. The downside is that they are heavier than the other bags mentioned here. Apart from that, they are also bulky which means you will have to plan ahead when you try to pack them.
Float Bag/Dry Bag
If you're going on a boat trip then you will need a way to keep your gear dry, which is what dry bags are for. You usually store essential documents and electronics in these bags.
Setup
Your final step is to setup your gear in your bug out bag. This will require some planning.
You can setup your gear using different storage options. For example , you can get a full size backpack bag, place all your food and clothing in the main body of the bag, place a metal carrying case containing your meds in an external pocket, all your documents in a dry bag inside an internal pocket, and then arrange the rest of your gear in the other pockets in your backpack.
