So far, 2020 has been a rollercoaster—and not in a good way. Earthquakes, massive bushfires, and geopolitical tensions have spread fear and worry throughout the world. Now, coronavirus has infected millions while at the same time claiming countless lives.
With that, interest in survivalism is rising. People who didn't even think about the simplest emergencies in the past are now getting their own prepper gear. Well, if you're also starting to set up your supplies and equipment, you need to learn about one key addition: the tarp.
From Sheet to Shelter
Despite how plain it looks, a tarpaulin sheet can be transformed into all sorts of things that could very well determine your survival in worst-case scenarios. Say you find yourself stranded in an unknown place without any shelter, but there's a tarp in your gear.
Using that, as well as some cord or rope, you should be able to come up with a makeshift tent. Of course, it won't be as comfortable as an actual tent with its lack of breathability. Still, you'll at least be sure that you're sufficiently protected from the elements.
Stay Dry without the Bulk
Prolonged exposure to rain or snow could spell disaster. Yet depending on the situation, you may have to force yourself to go through entire areas despite the weather. But given how bulky jackets and umbrellas are, you might end up skipping them in your prepper gear.
If you find yourself in such a scenario, you could actually get enough protection from a sheet of tarp. Either wrap it around you and tie it where necessary, or cut a hole in the middle and make yourself a cheap yet extremely sturdy poncho.
Solving Water Supply Woes
One of the worst things that could happen during an emergency is not having access to clean water. Although you could use buckets to collect water from springs or rivers, how certain are you that you'd come across those? Besides, traveling with large containers could be troublesome.
Fortunately, a tarp can be used as a rain catcher. Tie its ends to poles or trees and wait for the rain to come. Alternatively, you could place the tarp over a sloped area so that you won't have to tie anything. What makes this even better is knowing that rainwater is generally clean and safe to drink.
Assortment of Possibilities
Even with these examples alone, it's obvious just how useful a simple sheet of tarp can be. It doesn't stop there though, as tarpaulin sheets can be made into cordage (when cut into strips and braided) as well as used to cover up structural damage (e.g. broken windows or parts of the roof).
It's also an effective ground cover, keeping insects and moisture at bay as you try to get some rest. And as you can surely imagine, it can likewise be made into a hammock or even a stretcher. All in all, with its impressive versatility, the tarp should definitely be a key part of your prepper gear.
