As the whole world heads into uncharted territories because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the need to prepare for the inevitable becomes even more important. However, during worst case scenarios, you may have no choice but to leave as soon as possible, with no ample time to prepare for what you're going to bring.
This is where a bug out bag comes in.
Bug Out Bag and Its Essentials
A bug out bag (BOB) is a pre-assembled bag that contains items that will allow you to survive for the next 3 days. If you've never put together a bug out bag before, listed below are the bare essentials of a BOB:
Hydration and Food: While humans can go for a few days without food, the lack of water will make the task of surviving a lot more difficult . Having 1L of water per day is the bare minimum. Thus, you should have at least 3L of water with you.
As for food, you'll need something that can be eaten right away, such as protein bars, energy gels, biscuits, or canned meats.
Clothes: The clothes in your bag will mostly depend on the environmental conditions in your area. Regardless of the weather, however, your core clothes should include:
A hat or bandanna
2 shirts (1 short-sleeved and 1 long-sleeved)
2 pairs of socks, a pair of pants (that aren't jeans)
2 sets of underwear
A warm rain jacket
A pair of waterproof hiking boots
You can wear the boots as you leave, as they usually take up a lot of space in the bag.
Shelter: Aside from a lightweight sleeping bag, make sure that you also have something that can protect you from the elements. If you don't have a lightweight tent, having a tarp poncho will serve you well no matter what you're dealing with.
Tools and Light: Your bug out bag should include a multipurpose survival knife that's easy to use. A multitool is also great to have as there may be tasks that you need to do that can't be handled by a knife.
Of course, don't forget your flashlights, as you may need to keep going even when it's already dark.
Communication Devices: Although bringing your cellphone is already a given, you may not be able to get reliable signals during an emergency. It's still recommended to bring a solar-powered power bank just in case.
A solar or battery-powered crank radio can help you get necessary information when your mobile phone can't catch a signal. Make sure that you pack extra batteries for your devices.
First Aid Kit: You may think that you're tough enough not to get hurt along the way, but things can quickly become unpredictable in these situations. Be wise and make sure that you pack a first aid kit.
Once you've gathered all of these items, pack them all into a sturdy backpack. Your bug out bag must specifically be a backpack because it's easier to carry and move around in.
Be Prepared to Head Out When You Need To!
Life likes to throw us off with surprises. Sometimes, it can be as big as having to leave your house instantly, with no definite timeline of when you can come back. In such cases, having a bug out bag can mean the difference between life and death.
