To be a good in photography, all you need is a little bit of experience and know-how. Following are some useful tips that will help you improve as a photographer.
Have eye contact with your subject. – Having eye contact makes the picture engaging, like in real life. When taking someone's picture, make sure that the camera is at eye level with the subject. This way, you can capture the person's enthralling smile and charming gaze. When working with kids, stoop to their level. Don't force them to look at the camera. The eye level angle is enough to generate an inviting and personal feeling that draws you to the picture.
Use plain background. – With a plain background, the focus is on the subject. As you look through the viewfinder, examine the area around the subject. Check to see if there are unnecessary objects around that obstructs the perfect image of the subjects head like trees protruding from the head, or cars dangling from the ears.
Use flash when outdoors. – The sun's glare can create deep and unattractive facial shadows. Get rid of the shadows and brighten the face by using the flash. On a sunny day, set the flash on.
Move closer. – If the subject is no bigger than a car, come a couple of steps closer before shooting. The idea is to make the subject fill the picture area. By moving closer, you capture the telling details like an arched eyebrow of the sprinkling of freckles. However, avoid getting too close or you may get a blurry picture. For most cameras, three feet is the closest focusing distance.
Move it from the center. – Performers need to be in center stage, but this is not so for your picture's subject. To bring the picture to life, simply move the subject out of the middle. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid in the viewfinder. Put the subject in one of the intersections.
Lock the focus. – Some cameras automatically focus on whatever is in the center. Thus, you need to have the focus locked if the subject isn't at the center. This will result to a sharp picture. Make it a point to always move the subject out of the center to improve your pictures. Avoid blurry pictures by locking the focus with your subject at the center first, then recomposing the picture in a way that the subject is not in the middle.
Know the range of your flash. – The most common mistake people make when using the flash is shooting beyond the range of the flash. This results to a picture that is too dark. Usually the maximum range is under 15 feet. Check your manual to be sure.
Be careful about the light. – After the subject, lighting is the next most important aspect of a picture. If your subject has wrinkles, bright sunlight will enhance them. However, a cloudy day's soft light will subdue them. Move the subject or yourself if you don't like the effect of the light on the subject.
Take vertical pictures. – A lot of pictures appear better when taken vertically. So, make sure to turn the camera sideways to take some vertical pictures – unless you camera is vertically challenged.
Be a photo director. – Be in control of how you take pictures, and you will notice significant improvements. Be the director and not a mere passive picture-taker. You choose the location, decide on the props, and arrange the subjects.
By following the tips covered in this post, you will be able to take better pictures in no time.
