Has picking off dozens of ticks off your dog become a common annual ritual during the spring and summer months? Those pesky little buggers seem to get everywhere on your dog and it is very difficult to get them all out. If that isnt bad enough, some of the ticks might even latch onto you and your family, transmitting diseases as they do. You do not have to go so far as to quarantine your dog inside the house for the whole year, there are many ways that you can prevent ticks on dogs, and they are all quite easy.
Spot-on Treatments
There are actually pretty reliable spot treatments that will make your dogs body unpleasant for ticks and other parasites. These treatments often come in a small plastic capsule that contain the medication, just pop off the cap and then apply the contents onto the back of your dogs neck, making sure that it touches the skin and not just the fur. These medications can actually keep ticks as well as fleas away for a month or so.
Oral Medications
There are also pills that you can give your dogs once a month to help keep ticks and other parasites from latching onto your dog. These treatments work by making the natural oils that your dog secretes to keep his fur shiny, but unappealing for parasites.
Shampoos
Medicated shampoos are one of the most popular, and oldest forms of tick treatment available. Although medicated shampoos are much more affordable than spot-on and oral medications for ticks, you will need to use it much more often as the medication in the shampoo do not last as long. You will need to give your dog a bath using the shampoo every two weeks or so.
Tick Dips
A tick dip is a concentrated chemical that must be diluted in warm water and applied onto the dogs fur using a sponge, or by directly pouring it over the back and on the head (very carefully of course) and then letting it dry. This treatment is not supposed to be rinsed off with water.
Powders
This is yet another method of removing ticks on dogs using topical medication. You just need to sprinkle the powder all over your dog, be extremely careful when applying it around the face and mouth area. You can also spread the powder over the place where your dog sleeps to kill any ticks that might have unlatched and are hiding there. The downside to this is that it is not quite as effective at keeping ticks away, so you will need to reapply the powder on your dog at least once a week.
Getting rid of the ticks on your dog can be quite difficult, that is if you do it manually. Thankfully, there are many ways that you can easily remove ticks on dogs using various kinds of products. It is almost impossible to prevent ticks from attaching onto your dog, but with the help of these products, dealing with them is now at least more bearable.
