A dog does not age like humans. In fact, they age faster. This notion is believed since the early 1900's. It is said that a ratio for dog years to human years is equivalent to 7:1, 7 years for humans, and a year for dogs. -- which means that a dog may be a year old in human years, but not so in dog years. In a later explanation of how dogs age, it is stated that calculating your dog's age in human years is not as simple as a year is surely 7 years in our time. That is just a rough estimate.
A dog's age in dog years to human years also depends on their size. Wherever they may fall into the small, medium, large, and giant breeds, their ages will surely differ. For example, a dog aged 1 in human years is roughly 15 years old, but when considering its size, it is different. If it is a small or medium breed dog, it will remain 15 for 1 human year, but if the age of a larger breed is 14 years old, it will remain 14 when it is classified into a giant breed. It does not remain in that ratio for the rest of its age because it will differ as its human year increases.
Larger dogs age faster than smaller breeds, thus small breeds live longer than large breeds. The exact and proven reason behind this remains unknown, but one of the several possibilities includes the body mass of a dog. They said that said factor lessens the dog's own life expectancy.
According to this possibility, small breeds have less body mass as compared to those who have larger breeds, promoting more physical activities to keep the dog in shape. Another possibility proposed is that because of the larger breeds aging faster than smaller breeds, they also catch or suffer from different kinds of health complications earlier than the latter. Some of the complications include bone or joint injuries like hip dysplasia that are common for larger breeds of dogs.
To calculate dog years to human years, general guidelines include the 7:1 ratio, and that increases to 9 years for 2 dog years, and succeeding human years would be roughly five years for dogs.
Though there are ways stated above, they are all just rough estimates of a dog's actual age when converted into human years. Many have been trying to find reliable methods to compare dog years to human years for centuries, but unfortunately, there are still no methods proven to work. The myth's origin where in it is believed that a human year is equivalent to seven dog years may remain unknown, but it is widely used and believed to be the closest we can get in computing dog years to human years.
Attempting to successfully calculate a dog's age in human years through a reliable and consistent method would be one of the biggest challenges for those who focus on studying this matter.
