HISTORY
The King Corso is a Mastiff-type dog that is often referred to as Molossus dogs. The name derives from the Latin word "canis" for "dog", and an old Italian word "cohors", which means "protector" or "sturdy".
Dogs of this type are usually used in combat during the ancient times. Their unique characteristics have been an asset in combat such as their physical superiority, natural intelligence, territorial minds, and loyalty among others.
The breed was later spread to Italy and to other parts of Europe where they were used as guards in different areas -- may it be in guarding flocks, protecting livestock, farmlands, and even family. The breed has been said to nearly cease to exist after World War II, but after being prioritized in breeding programs, the breed was successfully recovered in the 1990's.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The King Corso is a medium to large breed kind of dog that has an average height of 24 to 27 inches tall, and can weigh up to 120 pounds. They have a broad head with a square muzzle and ears that may be cropped or not. Their coats are short, straight, and coarse that may appear to be black, red, gray, or fawn in color.
TRAITS
This dog breed is highly intelligent and naturally territorial. It is vigilant of its surroundings, which is considered to be the main characteristic of a guard dog. They are known to be reliable, and an excellent family-friendly dog once trained by an owner that is consistent and provides a firm leadership towards them.
Voice plays a part in training them for they are sensitive to the tonality of the voice of the one who trains them. They also require a lot of socialization. Any breed can easily become intrusive and agitated once they are socially-deprived and oblivious of the world, and the King Corso breed is no exception to this.
They are not advisable "first dogs" in families because they need constant training and socialization, but as stated above, as long as they are dealt with consistency, patience and a lot of care, they can be good companions.
HEALTH
The King Corso can live up to a span of 10 up to 11 years. Being a large breed, it is prone to different bone and joint injuries like hip and elbow dysplasia where their joints are partially or completely dislocated. They are also no stranger to heart, skin, and gastrointestinal diseases. Because of their wrinkled skin, infections usually take place on the folds, making skin diseases look like allergies common for this dog breed. Bloating, a gastrointestinal syndrome, can affect a dog's life within hours, and the Corso has a high risk of suffering from it.
CARE
They are a short-haired breed of dogs, so there is not a lot of grooming needed. Physical activities are much needed to keep this breed in good shape. At the very least, a long, speedy walk or jog every day should be enough to keep them in a good state.
