HISTORY
English Pointers, or simply "pointers" have been great hunting sidekicks since the 1600's. Their exceptional ability to point and track has been their great asset and are able to assist hunters. They fall into one of the primary types of gun dogs or hunting dogs, the pointing breed.
English Pointers today are believed to come from a cross of Bloodhounds, Foxhounds, Greyhounds, and Setters. All breeds stated have the stamina, heightened senses, and other qualities that are fit for a hunting companion. This breed had been exported in numbers since the beginning of the 20th century.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
The English Pointer is a medium to large breed that has long, elongated necks, slightly pointed ears, and a nose that is slightly higher on its muzzle. For male pointer, they weigh from 55 to 75 pounds with an average height of 25 to 28 inches tall. For female pointer, their weight ranges from 44 to 65 pounds with an average height of 23 to 26 inches tall. Their coats are short, straight, and smooth; it may appear black, liver, orange, or lemon in color.
TRAITS
Known for their hunting heritage, they are independent and are mostly on their own. Being an active dog, they need constant training and exercise to stay in shape. Just from the expression on their faces, it is known that they are alert and highly conscious of their surroundings -- which makes them excellent watchdogs. They need socialization, for being socially-deprived is against their hunting heritage, they would not as perceptive as they can be when not well-socialized. Pointers can be destructive when not given enough attention, or when not given enough exercise and physical activities. On the other hand, they are even-tempered and harmless guard dogs. They are soft-hearted, so they will easily get upset for harsh words and treatment, so voice is advisably kept medium to low. They make excellent pets even if they can be stubborn sometimes.
HEALTH
The English Pointer can live up to a span of 12-15 years. They are generally healthy, for they are active dogs that stay in shape, but being a large breed, it is no stranger to different bone and joint injuries like hip and elbow dysplasia where the joints may be partially or completely dislocated. Pointers are more prone to eye diseases such as cataracts, pannus, and entropion. Sadly, Pointers are known to commonly suffer from epileptic seizures.
CARE
An English Pointer's grooming needs are minimal, and not that prioritized. Cleaning the ears is a must. This is because they tend to have frequent wax build-up since their ears flap whenever they run, making the ears accessible for different kinds of particles. They are a high-energy type of dogs, so physical activities make this breed happy and healthy at the same time. Training and hiking are good bonding methods if you own a Pointer. Quality time is needed as much as training because behind that strong and alert look is a dog that needs love and affection, too.
