Multimeters are tools that electricians and the like use to measure voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits. These instruments are invaluable pieces of equipment in many fields, the primary of which are electricians.
There are two basic types of multimeter, the first is the analog multimeter, and the second is digital multimeter or DMM. Of the two, it is best that you can choose is the digital (more on why later).
The biggest difference between analog and digital multimeters is the display. The analog multimeter has a printed face and a needle that swings from left to right to show the amount being measured. DMMs have a large, clear LCD screen that displays various types of information, the larger numerals being the main thing that is being measured. Based on usability alone, the DMMs are easier to read because you no longer have to look carefully at where the needle is pointing to.
DMMs are also more accurate when giving readings. With analog multimeters, you have to count how many gradations the needle passed; the best reading that you can get is in two decimal places. DMMs can give up to five decimal places, in addition, digital multimeters can also measure things in the negative range.
Although both types of multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance, the digital multimeter has more functionality. Aside from the three basic measurements, most of the commercially-available DMMs can also measure frequency, capacitance, temperature (using a thermocouple attachment), continuity (using a buzzer to make measurements easier when looking at the board), and other measurements.
Another thing that makes DMMs easier to use is the auto-ranging feature. Many of the higher-end models of DMMs have an auto ranging function; this allows the device to automatically find the range needed to accurately get a reading. In analog multimeters, you need to twist the dial up or down the gradations until you find the right range to actually get a reading. For instance, if you need to measure a resistor, but you do not know how to read the color codes, you just press the probes on either side and the multimeter will do the rest for you.
Price is also an area of contention when it comes to choosing a multimeter. There are many affordable digital multimeters that cost just a bit over $10 that can still give quite accurate readings, these kinds are popular among amateur electricians and hobbyists. On the other hand, there are some analog multimeters that are even cheaper, some costing over $5. However, it is more cost-effective to buy DMMs as they tend to last longer, and they are also easier to calibrate.
There are still a handful of purists who still use the analog style of multimeters, but they are quickly dwindling in numbers because a digital multimeter has proven to be much easier to use, and provides more accurate readings. If you are looking for your first ever multimeter, it is highly suggested that you get a DMM.
