However, there are many reasons why this multimeter is expensive, and they are all very valid. Once you understand why the Fluke 87 is priced the way that it is, you will actually want to save up your money so you can get one for yourself.
Here are some of the reasons why the Fluke 87 multimeter is so expensive:
Safe for mains and high voltage work � I you will be working with high voltages or circuits with massively varying potentials. Fluke is known for having boards that are designed properly. This means you won�t get electrocuted when you are using Fluke multimeters; it does not even take high voltages. You will not experience the same thing when you choose to use a cheap $10 multimeter.
Flukes are explosion-resistant. Try sticking a cheap multimeter that is in resistance mode and put on a circuit with a 400v 30A power supply and watch as it blows your hands off your wrists. Flukes are dead meters by design, that means that they have all of the necessary safety features to prevent catastrophic failure from happening.
They are reliable. Even the early editions of the Fluke 87 are still being in use today. The old Fluke 87s can still be calibrated easily, and they are still as accurate now as they were ten years before. Multimeters from other vendors, especially those that are worth $10, rarely survive to reach the three-year mark.
Cheap multimeters have poorly-insulated probes. When you find that the insulation on the probes of your $10 meter is starting to melt, you know you�re in trouble. If you were to try to use it on a main circuit or any high-voltage circuit, expect to get the shock of your life.
The Fluke 87 has true RMS readings. Without getting too technical, you will need true RMS readings if you are measuring AC currents. Not all DMMs can handle true RMS reading quite like the Fluke multimeter 87 can.
As mentioned earlier, even older Fluke 87 multimeters can still be easily be calibrated. This you cannot do with analog and some other older models of multimeters.
Yes, the Fluke multimeter 87 is quite expensive, but they are worth every cent that you for them. Sure, you can choose to use with the very cheap off-brand multimeters for your simple projects, but if you will be tackling huge loads it is best that you get a multimeter that is actually up for the job, get the Fluke multimeter 87.
