If it falls below 10v then the battery needs to be changed. If the reading is within the 11v to 12v range, you may just need to recharge the battery.

You should also check if the car�s electrical systems are still drawing power even if the vehicle is still off. Begin by plugging the red probe into the amps input jack. Set the dial to the highest setting on the amperage scale.

Disconnect the cable from the battery�s negative terminal. Attach the red probe to the cable and the black one to the terminal. It should read zero amps.

Move the dial to the next lowest setting. Keep going until you get a reading. The ideal should be 50mA. If you get a reading higher than this, then your car is suffering from parasitic drain.

Another useful task you can perform with an automotive multimeter is testing the spark plug. Remove the plugs before testing, and clean them of any corrosion to get an accurate reading. Set the multimeter to 20k ohms and place the red probe on the center electrode at the top of the plug and the black probe on the other end. You should get a reading of around 6k ohms.
