An automotive multimeter is a device that every car owner should have. This device lets them diagnose common problems so they can troubleshoot them. For instance, you can use it to check the charge on your battery if your car does not start to see if it needs to be changed.
While you can perform many of these tests with a regular multimeter, using one that is specifically intended for automotive use is safer since they are rated for high voltages. In addition, they have useful features such as a built-in flashlight, temperature measurement and a meter for checking battery health.
The main consideration when choosing a multimeter for cars is safety. The device has to have a rubber coating around its casing. This will protect you from being electrocuted while youre using the multimeter.
You also have to make sure the multimeter is rated to be able to check the higher voltages in automotive systems. Otherwise, you may not get accurate readings and misdiagnose the problem.
Of course, the multimeter should also be auto-ranging, since it will automatically detect the required range without you having to set the device. You should also get one that will test for both AC and DC since this will make it more flexible, and let you make more tests.
Other features that you should look out for include:
Li-ion batteries. This will allow you to recharge the multimeter rather than having to use disposable batteries.
Alligator clips. This will be useful when you have to connect the probes to battery terminals.
LCD backlight. This lets you read the screen even in poor light conditions.
The most common use for an automotive multimeter is to test your battery voltage if it does not start. Car batteries are rated at 12v so if you test it with a multimeter, it should read above this. If it falls below 10v then the battery needs to be changed. If the reading is within the 11v to 12v range, you may just need to recharge the battery.
You should also check if the cars electrical systems are still drawing power even if the vehicle is still off. Begin by plugging the red probe into the amps input jack. Set the dial to the highest setting on the amperage scale.
Disconnect the cable from the batterys negative terminal. Attach the red probe to the cable and the black one to the terminal. It should read zero amps.
Move the dial to the next lowest setting. Keep going until you get a reading. The ideal should be 50mA. If you get a reading higher than this, then your car is suffering from parasitic drain.
Another useful task you can perform with an automotive multimeter is testing the spark plug. Remove the plugs before testing, and clean them of any corrosion to get an accurate reading. Set the multimeter to 20k ohms and place the red probe on the center electrode at the top of the plug and the black probe on the other end. You should get a reading of around 6k ohms.
