While you might think that availing of a multimeter for sale if you are not an electronics DIYer would be a waste of money, you would be wrong. There are many useful household tests you can perform using this measurement device that can save you money.
Checking if batteries are still good. A multimeter comes with two probes colored red and black. The black one should be plugged into the port labeled COM. The red one should be in the port labeled ohms (omega symbol) and volts (V).
Since standard disposable batteries have a 1.5v rating, set the multimeter to measure for this range. If your device has auto-range function, just set the device to measure DC (the symbol is a V with a straight line on top). If you have to set the range manually, set the dial to 20.
Touch the red probe to the positive end of the battery (the one with the plug that sticks out) and the black probe to the opposite end. If the battery is still good, the reading should be 1.5v; if it is lower, the battery is dead or dying. An OL reading means youve set the dial setting too low.
You can use the multimeter to check any kind of disposable battery as long as you are aware of its voltage rating. For instance, a flat watch battery has a 3v rating. To check it, place the probes on either side of the battery.
Checking the integrity of an extension cord. You can use a multimeter to test if that old extension cord you havent used in a while still works. First, set the device to continuity test mode (the soundwave symbol).
Touch the black probe to one of the ports (the part where you plug in the appliance) and the red to the plug (the part that is inserted into the power outlet). If the cord is still good, the multimeter should emit a beep or tone. Be sure to check all the ports. If one port is broken, you should not use it or just buy a new cord.
Checking your car battery. This is one of the best reasons to avail of a multimeter for sale since it can save you some grief. You can determine if you have to change your battery or if charging it will do.
Set the multimeter to measure DC and the dial setting to 20. Put the red probe in the positive terminal (red) of the battery and the black probe to the negative terminal (black).
If the reading is 12.5v or more, your battery is still good. If it is 12.3v, the battery has a 75% charge. If it is 11.8v or less, the charge of your battery is 25 percent. A low reading means you will have to slow charge the battery. If the reading does not improve after doing this, you may need to replace it.
You can find an affordable multimeter for sale online or at your local hardware that will allow you to perform these tests and many others.
