The idea of wearing intelligent watches may have been unthinkable 50 years ago. And if you mention the possibility of a future smart watch, you will likely get an incredulous look.

In 1982, Pulsar developed to become the first watch to have a memory bank. This was later followed by Casio�s calculator and computer watches, and the Nelsonic Games watches, also by Casio.

The 1990s saw more of electronic wristwatch, like the Timex Datalink which communicates with a PC via wireless data transfer. The year 1998 has Steve Mann named the �father of wearable computing� with the launching of his Linux wristwatch.

Today, the list of companies continues to grow, like Acer, Blackberry, Apple, and more. These companies, though, face challenges in the development of smart watches, such as:

Physical size of watches which are likely to be large
Short battery life which is an ongoing concern for developers. The more features are added, the shorter the battery life of electronic watches
Increasing smart watch research resulting to novel display technologies

Smart watch functionalities

Intelligent watches are more than the traditional analog time tracking device. Some of these smart electronic watches operate apps with playback of digital media, like radio streamed to your Bluetooth headphones, and audio track.

Other electronic watches are used in sports as activity or fitness tracker, like in GPS watches designed for training, outdoor sports, and diving. Functions for this type of intelligent watches include training programs, speed display, lap times, GPS tracking, heart rate monitor, cadence sensor, and sport transitions.

Still others link to a smartphone that enables the display of data, such as SMS messages, calls, calendar, emails, and other data made available by a compatible phone app.

With consumers� growing interest in health and fitness-related activities, developers came up with fitness tracker which gives feedback on number of kilometers walked, hours slept, and heart rate.

And, there is the fashion feature of smart watches. A wrist watch is definitely a fashion item which determines your ability to dress appropriately for any occasion. It is a fashion statement which says �This is who I am.�

The smartwatch industry is expected to grow, despite challenges it faces. Consumers will go for intelligent watches since they are passive and less obtrusive than smartphones. You can simply glance at your smart watch to track the time or look at notifications.

Look around you anytime and you see people glued to their smart phones, which is something not so smart and actually discourteous at times, especially when you are with people. Smart watches may change people�s behavior with their electronic gadgets. These devices may just reclaim your mental space which has been overrun by smartphones.
