Many people think that expats are just one type of person, but in reality, they are not. Expats move to different countries for many different reasons. If you are an expat yourself, its important to know which expats are like you and which arent. Therefore, heres a quick guide that can help you understand the different types of expats.
Usually there are two types of expats: expats who moved for work, and expats who moved for pleasure. Here, we will talk about the two types in detail.
Expats Moving For Work
Foreign Assignees. These are the types of expats who have moved to a new country because of their job. These people are usually busy, working more than 46 hours every week. You will oftentimes never find these people hanging around in local parks or hot spots in the city. You will only see them if you live next to them or if you work with them in the same organization or facility.
Career Expats. These people are bit different from foreign assignees in a way that that instead of being assigned by a company to move to a different country, they found their contracts on their own. Most likely they were looking for a career opportunity in another country while they were staying in their home nation, found it, and soon relocated. Usually, these types of expats can be found in countries like Kenya, Belgium, Bahrain, Oman, or Luxembourg.
Foreign Recruits. They are similar in foreign assignees in a way that they have been asked to move to a different nation. However, the circumstance is different between the two because instead of the main office being located in the expats residence, the company is based in the country where the expat is going, so the expat was basically outsourced for the job.
Traveling Spouse. Usually but not all the time, these are women who have gone with their husbands abroad to follow their spouses pursuit in their career or studies. You will usually find these kinds of expats based in countries like Singapore, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, or Switzerland.
Expats Moving For Pleasure
Romantics. Romantics moved for love. They may have a lover waiting for them in the place where they expatriated to. You will usually find these people in countries like Sweden, Argentina, Greece, Norway, or Iceland.
Single Destination Expats. These expats choose to live in a particular country, stay there, and build their life there. These people are the most likely to get along the best with the local culture.
Greener Pasture Expats. These expats moved to their country of choice hoping for a better life. A lot of them travel from places where the living conditions are not satisfactory, and so they decided to abandon their homeland for a better place.
Family Expats. These types of expats move abroad so they can start over and live a new way of life. These people can move to countries far away, but they can also choose to move to nearby countries. These people can be found in countries like Kuwait, Canada, New Zealand, or Greece.
