Contrary to popular belief, the Canary Islands are not named after chirping birds. Rather the archipelago got their name from the Latin word for dog Canaria. It is believed that the name was coined by Europeans for either finding large dogs in the islands or for the seals, also called sea dogs that live in the island.
It is a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa known for its volcanic islands known for their sandy beaches. The archipelago has seven main islands, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. Each of these islands has their unique characteristics that make the islands a popular getaway destination.
Lanzarote is one of the more popular islands of the seven. It was born through volcanic activity that solidified lava and formed rock formations. It is often called The Island of Eternal Spring for its year-round temperate weather, white and black sand beaches, and haunting volcanic landscape.
There are a number of things to do in Lanzarote. Some of the must-sees and must-dos include partaking in the various tours and excursions to experience the wonders of Lanzarote:
Take a guided volcanoes tour in Lanzarote
Experience three volcanoes with a guided hike in Lanzarotes Volcanoes Natural Park. The tour will walk through volcanic terrain, climb La Rilla, explore Montana Colorada and go inside Volcan del Cuervo.
Diving Museo Atlantico
Museo Atlantico is the only underwater sculpture museum in Europe that features more than 300 works by British sculptor, Jason deCaires Taylor. There are tours made for certified scuba divers and excursions from glass-bottomed boats for non-certified patrons.
The sculptures are made with pH neutral materials designed to care for marine life and foster the reproduction of local fish species. It also created a habitat for marine life in the UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve.
The most notable sculptures include The Rubicon, The Vortex and The Raft of Lampedusa. The exhibition pays tribute to the history of the islands, to the refugees that succeeded, and to dreams that are left at the bottom of the sea.
Camel safari in Timanfaya National Park
Never rode a camel? Now is your chance. Inside Volcanoes Park and just bordering Timanfaya National Park stands Echadero del Camellos. It is one of the most photographed attractions in Lanzarote that you and your family can enjoy.
The safari includes a 25-minute camel ride though the parks lava formations. You will be astonished with its complete lack of vegetation and the psychedelic ride with colors ranging from orange, ochre, red to black.
Getting to know Csar Manrique
Csar Manrique is a painter, sculptor and an all-around artist whose works are displayed all over the archipelago. His home, El Taro de Tahiche, in Lanzarote holds two permanent exhibitions, one of contemporary art made by artists of his generation and another of his personal works.
Manrique used the island as his canvas and created works that presented the interactions of man and the environment. The artists thrust is protected and continued by the Cesar Manrique Foundation.
Visit the Papagayo Beaches
Have a beach excursion in Lanzarotes Papagayo Beaches. Theyre located in the southern tip of the island with a protected coast, majestic silhouette and pretty golden sand. The area is made up of five beaches: Mujeres, El Pozo, Caleta del Congrio, Puerto Muelas and El Papagayo. Each beach is separated by low rocky outcrops. Visitors can take a dip or explore the hidden nooks and small caves in the area.
Have some wine at La Geria
A third of the island is covered in grit, a by-product of the volcanic eruptions in the archipelago. The islanders used this black ash to make Lanzarote one of the best wine-growing areas in the Canary Islands. La Geria, the wine-making region, covers about 3,000 hectares of land to plant and grow vines.
The grape vines are protected by building small, curved stonewalls around each vine and grown in shallow pits. It protects the grapes from rainfall and aids the vines in harvesting as well.
Lanzarote has a lot to offer any type of traveler whether you enjoy a simple and relaxing beach day, like to enjoy a unique wine, visit museums or ride and view a park atop a camel Lanzarote is packed with everything to make the trip just for you.
