Wearing jewelry adds spice to your outfit, as most fashion insiders would say. You can don an outfit in monochrome and light it up with statement hip hop jewelry, or a set of fancy bangles. A pair of pearl earring can instantly create an elegant look. There is no doubt that jewelry are as essential as any accessory (Read: shoes and bags), so they must be taken care of.
The Soap and Water Method
The simplest way to clean your jewelry is to use warm soapy water and clean the accessory with a fine-bristled toothbrush. Although most jewelry stores will give you a cleaning agent, this solvent may not be the best solution to grease, oil, and discoloring. Even ultrasonic cleaners destroy vintage necklaces. But if you insist on using specialist cleaners, remember this formula: gemset, gold, and platinum must NOT be cleaned using a silver-dip type cleaner. After cleaning, the piece must be allowed to completely dry.
A Jewelry Care Kit
Aside from cleaning the jewelry gently, have a kit available in case you need to immediately clean your jewelry. Each piece has its use – glue for reattaching gems to fancy costume jewelry, chamois cloth for polishing, Q-tips for cleaning those hard-to-reach spots and crevices, and tweezers for resetting the stones.
No Jewelry in Bed
Sleeping in your favorite jewelry may sound sexy and sophisticated, but it can definitely damage exquisite pieces. Earrings could come as you roll in bed. Worse, they could even end up inside your ear. It is still safer to put your jewelry in their respective boxes before you retire to dream land.
Correct and Separate Storage
Speaking of boxes, it is also better to keep your accessories in various boxes – or a huge box with compartments -- instead of putting them together in one box. One stone could scratch another, and chains could get in a tangled mess. Pearl necklaces should be left hanging from wall hooks or a rack. Restring them every five years to prevent the thread or nylon wire from snapping.
To Spritz or Not to Spritz
Perfume and other chemicals can potentially damage your jewelry, as most of these contain alcohol. Spray on your perfume and lather your lotion first before wearing accessories. Jewelry should be the last thing you would put on when you are getting dressed.
Avoid Contamination
Keep your jewelry away from anything that could contaminate them. This includes water, cosmetics, and even the body's natural oils. Avoid getting your accessories wet. That said, the only time they should be in contact with water is when you are cleaning them.
Never wear your precious necklace or earrings when you are swimming in the pool or at the beach, when you are working in the garden, playing sports, or cleaning your home.
Periodic Checking
Check the pieces every now and then so you can do damage control early on. For example, ensure that a clasp is secure, or that a piece is not missing a single stone. Check for discoloration, scratches, or tarnishing issues.
