A sheepskin rug is made to be shown off. You can have your HYPERLINK "https://ozwool.net/product/ozmade-ivory-infant-care-natural-colour/" toddlers play on it. Or HYPERLINK "https://ozwool.net/product/long-wool-flat-cushion/" drape it over your couch for added warmth and cushion. As such, they can get dirty over time. Cleaning a sheepskin rug is actually bloody easy. If done properly, it can even make your rug look fresh again. Here are the steps.
Brushing
Using a sheepskin carding brush, give the sheepskin rug a good brushing while it's still dry. This step untangles the knots on the wool fibres before you wash the rug. This also prevents the wool from getting matted.
Washing
You can either hand wash your sheepskin rug or use the -gentle- cycle setting of your washing machine. If you have a HYPERLINK "https://ozwool.net/product/high-temperature-medical-sheepskin-underlay/" large sheepskin rug, you can wash it in your bathtub using warm water. Around 38 degrees Celsius should be enough. You should also use HYPERLINK "https://ozwool.net/product/woolskin-sheepskin-shampoo-wool-wash-detergent/" specialised sheepskin wool wash.
You should not massage or agitate the wool fibres too much while you're washing the sheepskin rug. A gentle swishing should be sufficient. Water movement should be enough to dislodge the dirt particles but not too much that the wool mattes up. Swish the water for 3 to 5 minutes.
Rinsing
Remove the dirty water from the tub or the washing machine. Refill with warm water then gently rinse the sheepskin rug to remove the remaining dirt and soap. Repeat this step until water is mostly clear.
Drying
To remove the excess water, roll up the sheepskin rug and squeeze out as much water as you can. Let the rug dry for 20 to 30 minutes. After most water has dripped out, put the rug in the spin dryer to take out the remaining water. You can also just let all the water drip out but it will take a longer time.
After removing the excess water, lay a clean towel and put the sheepskin rug over it. Make sure that the rug lays flat on the towel. Leave it that way for a whole 24 hours. The leather should dry slowly. Keep it away from high heat sources like direct sunlight or a heater. Extreme heat can cause the leather to harden or shrink. You can use a dehumidifier to speed up the drying process.
Brushing
While the sheepskin rug is still damp, use a sheepskin carding to brush to untangle the wool fibres. The wool fibres will dry quickly if its a warm day. Do another brushing when the rug is completely dry. After the final brushing, the wool should be free from tangles and fluffy. Its normal for some wool fibres to come out when brushing.
By following the steps given, cleaning your sheepskin rug should be a breeze and you can even do it yourself. Make sure you follow the precautions to properly take care of the leather and wool fibres of the rug.
If you have an HYPERLINK "https://ozwool.net/product/pink-baby-care-sheepskin/" artificially dyed sheepskin rug, it should be dry-cleaned to prevent the colour from being washed out. If you want to do it yourself, add some table salt in the water. This will help fix the dye so not too much will be washed out. Get your sheepskin rug from OZwool and get professional advice on how to take care of your rug.
