Sore muscles are a common issue in men and women's health. The pain in the muscles can be caused through exertion, overuse or under-use. Sometimes, muscles suffer from cramps, strains or sprains.
Generally, muscle soreness is due to micro tears in one's muscles. Muscle pain can be due to exercise, injury, dehydration, or blood flow problems. Sometimes, the lack of potassium, magnesium and calcium can also bring about soreness.
In many post-workout articles from men's health magazines, you will learn that muscles will naturally rebuild themselves and become stronger. This will cause the pain and soreness to diminish . But sometimes, you want the soreness to be soothed immediately because it is quite uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Especially if the soreness is not caused by exercise .
Here are some natural means to ease muscle pain:
1. Applying Heat
Overusing muscles can cause them to knot and be tight. You can ease the tension by applying heat through a warm bath or warm shower. When the muscles are warmed up, the healing process becomes faster.
In the past, it is a common practice for people to apply ice packs to sore muscles so they can stop inflammation. However, icing only alleviates the pain but does not necessarily stop the inflammatory process altogether. This is an effective practice for temporary pain relief only as it numbs the muscles.
What you need to do is to allow the inflammatory process to continue so that the body will send the appropriate amount of fluid to the injured muscles and start the healing process. When you ice the sore muscles, you delay the recuperation.
2. Epsom Salts and Topical Magnesium Oil
Magnesium is a mineral that naturally relaxes muscles. Epsom salts are composed of magnesium sulfate that helps reduce swelling. Applying topical magnesium oil, which contains magnesium chloride, allows the mineral to go straight to the injured muscles and address the soreness.
Dissolve a cup of Epsom salts in warm water in your bath tub and soak yourself for 15 minutes. Do Epsom baths three times a week to ease your muscles. However, take note of your medical condition as Epsom salt baths are not advisable for people with diabetes, high blood pressure and heart problems.
Topical magnesium oil can be applied directly on the body part that has sore muscles. It can also be used as a preventative measure. For instance, you will be hiking, standing for a long time or working outside and you expect that you will have cramps, then spray a bit of magnesium oil on your leg before your activity.
3. Oral Magnesium
The body requires magnesium in order to prevent cramps and general muscle pains. You can get magnesium from squash, spinach, pumpkin seeds, molasses, black beans, Swiss chard, sesame seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, almonds, and cocoa powder. You may also take magnesium oral supplements to complement your diet.
4. Essential Oils
You won't see many articles on essential oils in men's health articles compared to women's health articles—but it doesn't mean that essential oils don't work for men. Essential oils are notably helpful in addressing muscle pain.
The top recommended essential oils for muscle cramps are peppermint, lemongrass and marjoram. For muscle spasms, use basil, chamomile and marjoram. When you have muscle tension, use peppermint, marjoram, lavender, helichrysum or chamomile. Apply one to two drops of the essential oil in olive oil or coconut oil and apply to the sore muscle area.
While these natural means are effective in relaxing your muscles, keep in mind that you should see a health are professional when you have severe or prolonged muscle pain.
