Ensuring Safety in the Workplace as an Employee

Article Category: Wellness, Fitness and Diet

Author Name: Muhammad Usman

Safety at work equates to productivity. Regardless of the kind of business or the size of the staff, it is important to have safety procedures and keep workplace hazards at bay. When injuries to people and damage to resources and equipment are curtailed, the business earns more profit and spends less on expenses.

Many companies have policies and guidelines on workplace safety. However, just having best practice procedures in place is not enough. To make it successful, there should be proper communication and compliance to said standards.

Management should be able to encourage their employees to become actively involved in keeping the workplace a safe environment. Educating employees about accompanying dangers related to their job as well as injury statistics is important. Additionally, providing incentives to acknowledge workplace safety behavior is a good motivation.

Protecting the employees' safety at work is the moral duty of employers, business owners or management. Nevertheless, safety at work is shared responsibility between management and employees.

If you are an employee, here are some things you can do to stay safe and avoid workplace hazards:

1. Be aware of your surroundings.
As a worker, you need to understand the specific hazards that your job entails. Observe what is happening around you, whether it is an equipment or your co-worker. Be alert and steer clear of potential unsafe areas or situations.

Know where the exits are in case of emergencies. When you are mindful of your surroundings, you can take preventative measures and will be ready to act accordingly when the need arises. Do not be complacent and think nothing is going to go wrong.

2. Learn to reduce stress.
Stress is one of the workplace hazards you should be wary of. A lot of employees have packed schedules—they work long hours and are under constant pressure with clients, co-workers or their bosses. Stress can lead to serious physical and mental illnesses.

You don't have to wait to be stressed before you do something about it. Address the issue even before it begins. There are a number of simple things you can do to minimize the effects of stress on a day-to-day basis, such as:

Learn to take regular breaks at work.
Watch your posture.
Get enough sleep and rest.
Ensure you get eat well.
Don't be insecure about your job or compare yourself with co-workers.
Create a to-do list.

3. Report unsafe conditions.
When you notice something in the workplace that is a potential health & safety risk, it is your duty to report it to your supervisor or manager. It can be a blocked fire exit, spills, dysfunctional emergency lights or multiple extension cords. These issues are not simple and they need to be addressed promptly.

Do not say that it is not your job . When something gets reported immediately, changes can be made to guarantee that injuries or hazards won't occur. The life you save may be yours.

4. Use the right equipment.
Always use the right machinery or tool to do a particular job. For example, do not use a scaffolding as a ladder. Moreover, you should use mechanical assistance whenever possible.

Wear protective gear as it relates to your work. It can be a hard hat, safety gloves, earplugs, face masks, etc. Keep yourself safe from possible injuries. It is the employer's obligation to provide safety gear and it is the employee's responsibility to use them accordingly.

Safety at work should be a culture that is instilled in everyone at the workplace. When everyone is educated and responsible, potential tragedies will be avoided. Remember, prevention is always better.
