Vaccination is very important for the health and safety of the family and of the community. Vaccines help prevent the spreading of contagious diseases such as HPV, chicken pox, measles, mumps, diphtheria, polio, and pertussis or whooping cough.
In the past century, smallpox was a very deadly disease that claimed more than 500 million lives. The vaccine for this illness was created and given to many people across the globe. Now, the disease is completely eradicated . Other vaccines, such as for mumps and polio, are close to this stage of disease eradication.
However, despite the obvious success of certain vaccines, there are still many people who are distrustful of vaccination. The apprehension comes from misunderstanding and confusion about the effectivity of vaccines, particularly with side effects.
Vaccines provide immunization by boosting the body's resistance to a particular disease. When the immune system is strong and insusceptible to a disease, the person does not acquire or spread the disease. Vaccines pave the way for improved health.
A vaccine constitutes a weak concentration of the virus or germ which is inoculated in the body. Once the immune system detects the attacking germ or virus, it generates antibodies to fight the invaders. The antibodies created will stay in the person's body for the rest of his life. This means that when the person is exposed to the same germs or virus again, the body can naturally resist it and become resistant .
Vaccines become one's protection against diseases, especially life-threatening ones. Except in cases where there is a medical issue, everyone needs vaccines—children and adults alike. But because of misinformation, people are erroneously rejecting vaccines.
It is time to bust the following myths to ensure health & safety is promoted in the family and in the community.
Myth 1: Vaccination produces bad side effects.
Getting a shot may bring some side effects but they are usually very mild. Some side effects include low-grade fever, swelling, tenderness redness or slight pain. These are all normal. Such side-effects happen because the body is fighting the invading germs or virus as it develops antibodies.
Myth 2: Vaccines are not safe.
Most of the vaccines developed are evaluated and tested for safety issues before they are approved to be released into the market. Scientists, medical professionals, doctors and those in health care do their best to determine the effectivity and safety of vaccines. If vaccination is stopped, there is the danger of epidemics.
Remember the case of whooping cough vaccine in Japan? In the early 1970s, children were given the vaccination and there were no reported deaths. However, rumors arose that the vaccine was dangerous so parents stopped having their children vaccinated. This resulted in an epidemic where a lot of children suffered from pertussis and a number of them died.
Myth 3: Vaccines cause autism.
There was widespread fear of vaccines after a doctor published a study that vaccines cause autism. However, this study has been questioned and there was absolutely no proof that vaccines can develop autism in children. This particular doctor was stripped of his medical license after issuing false information.
Myth 4: An infant's young immune system cannot handle the influx of germs or virus.
The harmful microorganisms in vaccines are in a weakened state and an infant's immune system can handle it. Exposure to the illness can trigger the development of antibodies that the child needs to face the real deal.
Myth 5: Vaccines can trigger the disease they are supposed to prevent.
People who receive a shot of the flu vaccine often get sick afterwards. This is the reason people think that when you have a vaccine, you can develop the disease. It is highly impossible to get a flu from a flu shot because there are dead viruses in that vaccine. In other vaccines, you may suffer from mild symptoms but you won't have the illness.
Keep in mind that immunizations can save your child's life. It can also save yours. You have the power to protect yourself and the people you care about. Vaccines also ensure health and safety in the community— outbreaks can be prevented. Don't be scared of vaccines. The benefits of vaccines outweigh the side effects or worries.
