Policies and guidelines are not enough in ensuring workplace safety. In fact, how safe a workplace is depends on the standards of safety carried out by each individual worker there. In order to remain as productive as possible without putting yourself in unnecessary risk, there are several tips that you need to know.
Posture Matters
You might be surprised at how your posture can help a lot in keeping you safe. For starters, you must limit the number of times you have to stoop and twist your body when reaching for something. Also, you must lift with your hips, not with your back, when attempting to move heavy objects.
Also, make sure that your workplace is ergonomically designed - from the layout to the types of furniture you work on. If everything is within your reach, you won't strain your body too much.
Mind Your Clothing
Aside from any policy your workplace has in place, you must be mindful of the kind of clothes that you wear at work. Pick something that hugs your body tightly with minimal tassels and other accessories that dangle. The more your clothing conforms to your body's silhouette, the less it is likely to get stuck in moving machinery like conveyor belts and elevator doors. Also, if possible, don't wear clothing that hazardous materials can easily eat through, and always wear safety equipment in critical zones.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
Maintaining a present state of mind is always on of the hallmarks of workplace safety. You have to know the various danger zones as well as the different safety zones such as fire exits, medicine cabinets, and safety equipment storage containers.
Once you've known the different risks and safety features in your workplace, you must then make sure that you keep all of these in mind when moving from one point to another. If your workplace a lot of vehicles and heavy machinery, you also have to be mindful of where they are at all times.
Don't Show Up Drunk or Under the Influence
A lot of workplace injuries and fatalities are caused by alcohol and drugs. Being under the influence of either substance impairs one's ability to make careful judgments of their surroundings, coordinate their work with others, and follow simple company guidelines. So as not to make yourself a liability to others, make sure that you are sober before you even show up for your shift.
Take Breaks
The simplest, and yet often overlooked, tip in ensuring workplace safety is to take breaks during the company's mandatory break periods. A lot of accidents occur because the worker is too tired or stressed out that they can't maintain focus over what they are doing.
One trick you can do is to schedule your workload in such a way that you do your heaviest jobs when your mind is most active. This often means doing these tasks first thing in the morning or at the early parts of your shift, if you work at night.
