Vaccination for infants has become a mandatory process. However, there is a rise in recent years of parents questioning whether vaccines are still necessary or not. To know if vaccines are truly safe for children, there are several facts about vaccines that one needs to know about.
How Do Vaccines Work?
One of the misconceptions about vaccines is that the baby is being injected by a version of a disease which can be life-threatening. However, the truth is that vaccine works by giving the immune system a chance to get acquainted to various diseases that the child will encounter later on. By inoculating them with tamed versions of diseases, their immune system can get to know how these viruses work and set up the necessary defenses.
Why Should Babies Get Vaccinated Early?
The reason why children are vaccinated at an early is because the immune system is at its weakest when the person is recently born. Prior to vaccinations, children are at risk to being exposed to a lot of diseases, many of them life-threatening.
Since infants have yet to come in contact with any deadly disease, this provides parents and medical professionals an opportunity to strengthen their immune systems. By strengthening them at an age when they are most at risk of developing illnesses, vaccines help lower the cases of such diseases spreading in the next few years.
Aren't a Lot of These Diseases Killed by Vaccines Already?
The answer is no. Diseases are part of the ecosystem. The risk can be reduced to a great degree with mass inoculation but a certain percentage will remain dormant, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
The reason we haven't heard of chicken pox outbreaks is because a lot of children have been immunized to it. However, if we stop vaccination altogether, the disease will spread again by the thousands in the next few generations.
Can Vaccines Cause Autism?
This is one of the newer issues raised against vaccines and the answer is one resounding NO. There is nothing that can directly link vaccines to the increase of likelihood that a child will become autistic.
Some point to the MMR Vaccine (the one that immunizes children to measles, mumps, and rubella) to have autism-causing properties while others point to thimerosal, a mercury-based compound found in many vaccines. Again, nothing is conclusive as far as vaccines and autism are concerned.
Children Still Grow Strong Naturally before Vaccines, so Why Make It Mandatory?
Although there is truth to the fact that a lot of children did grow strong in the past, this comes with a high mortality rate. Some children are exposed to deadly diseases as infants that cause their early death, while others resist it and become stronger.
The point with vaccines is to make sure that everybody's immune system is strong right from the start. When vaccinated, a child with a weak immune system can at least resist many of the life-shortening diseases early on. As for children with already strong immune systems, vaccination provides a considerable boost on their body's natural defenses.
