Applying for a job in any industry can be difficult the older you get. In some fields, the norm is that age is just as important a factor as one's own credentials.
Fortunately, freelancing is an option in consultancy and many people aged 50 and beyond enter the field through this route. Your stereotype of a business consultant might be this well-dressed professional still in his 40s but, surprisingly enough, there are a lot of who decided on becoming an independent consultant that are actually aged 50 and above.
Here are a few reasons why baby boomers are not just perfectly suited for independent consultancy but might actually be more qualified for the role than younger people.
1. Freelancing Equalizes the Hiring Field
The best part about freelancing is that potential clients do not have to meet the consultant in person. By extension, this means that they could practically care less how old that consultant is so as long as they have the right qualifications.
Since first impressions are no longer necessary with freelancing, baby boomers have the advantage of laying out the best of their qualities without fear of being rejected just because they're a few decades older than the rest of the applicants. Some baby boomers have even reported to finding work within mere days from handing out their first applications online.
2. More Connections
When it comes to friends, baby boomers have the distinct advantage over younger generations as they had been in various industries for far longer. When baby boomers become independent consultants, they bring with them a vast network of people that they had established a relationship with over their lifetime.
Of course, this includes people that they had worked with and can give clients a testimonial in their behalf. Clients are always on the lookout for any indication that that person is competent and a referral gives them just that.
3. Well-Hone Work Ethics
This might be because of the values and philosophies promoted in their generation but baby boomers tend to have better work ethics compared to younger generations. Qualities like committing to a self-imposed schedule and the ability to work with little to no oversight are just some of the traits that older generations have shown in the workplace and this would matter a lot once they shift to to independent consultancy.
4. Experience
Perhaps, the most important quality that baby boomers can leverage when freelancing is the sheer volume of experience they have in various industries compared to younger consultants. Younger consultants might have training on newer concepts but mere knowledge often pales in comparison to practical wisdom brought about by years of experience in certain fields.
Granted, even possessing all of these qualities will not make the decision of becoming an independent consultant easier. Anyone who wishes to enter consultancy will still go through the same hiring process and must avoid the same pitfalls, regardless of age and experience. With that said, the way one presents their qualifications as well as negotiate a favorable rate will still matter in making this new career all the more sustainable.
