Essential Products For Newborn Babies:
What You Need to Care for Your New Baby
Getting ready for a newborn is exciting but also a little scary at first. Trying to decide what you need is hard. As you walk through the baby aisles in any baby store you will see hundreds of products you could buy for your baby's arrival at home. Apart from the obvious things like a safe car seat, a cot and clothing. What other products do you really need? What are the Essential Products For Newborn Babies?
Essential Products For Newborn Babies every new parent should buy are explained here, plus which ones you can easily do without.
Essential Products For Newborn Babies Number one.
Nappies and a Nappy Bag
What is better Cloth or disposable Nappies?
Each family should decide what works best for them. Cloth nappies can be reused but the downside is you have to regularly clean them. Whereas disposable nappies are used once then thrown away. However, the cost of using disposables is far higher.
Whatever you choose, remember to stock up as you will need a lot, as you never know what or when your baby is going to do something. After only one week you will be having at least four dirty or wet nappies a day. Maybe you will choose disposables as this could mean a lot of washing.
Also, you will need a nappy bucket with a tight lid to dispose of nappies or to soak them depending on what type you use. A nappy bag is essential and must be large enough to hold all the following items:
Nappies
Baby cream
Baby wipes
Extra clothes for baby:
Changing pad or paper liner
Plastic bags for dirty nappies
Starting out you will have to use wipes and creams to clean your baby as for two to three weeks the umbilical chord will still be attached. After this, you may prefer to take a baby wash, water and a flannel or sponge.
Other Essential Products For Newborn Babies
Bathinette or plastic tub
Washcloths
Hooded towel
Baby shampoo
Mild baby soap
A Plastic cup for rinsing
A bath thermometer
Baby nail clippers or blunt scissors
The Essential Medical Chest
Medicines are needed just in case your baby is hurt or injured. It is advisable to include a Digital thermometer, preferably an under the arm one. The reason for this is an ear or forehead thermometer isn't accurate on babies younger than a year old.
A Cool mist humidifier: This will help clear blocked noses by adding moisture to the air your baby breathes.
Nose saline drops
Nappy cream
Antibacterial cream
Small bandages
Safety nail scissors
Remember that babies under 6 months should not have most other over-the-counter medicines. This includes ibuprofen and cold and cough remedies. If your baby has a fever or is acting sick, call the doctor.
Essential Baby Feeding Products
Consider your feeding preference
Before your baby is born, decide if you're going to breastfeed or use formula. If you want to use formula then stock up. Talk to your midwife and other parents about what brands are the best. Otherwise make sure you buy all the necessary breastfeeding creams, pumps and storage bottles.
Bottles
It is recommended to only buy glass or BPA-free plastic bottles with tight-fitting lids. This is to protect your baby's health and avoid spillages.
A Bottle sterilizer is a priority to ensure your baby is getting good food. Bottles need regular sterilizing and you can easily get through 3 to 4 bottles a day. So I recommend a steriliser that takes at least 6 to 8 bottles.
Nipple pads These absorbent pads will protect your clothing.
Bottle/nipple brush Again this is necessary to ensure that your bottles are well cleaned.
Cloths for cleaning and wiping away baby sick when they burp during winding.
A Nursing pillow for support when feeding
Essential Products For Newborn Babies: The Nursery
This is often where parents get carried away and overdecorate, buy expensive furnishings, curtains and rugs. Yes, it's fun to decorate your baby's room, but when it comes to the cot, keep it as bare as possible, Extra items like blankets, pillows, and toys are dangerous as they can stop babies from breathing in their sleep.
The Essentials you need for the Babys Room
The NHS recommends that for the first 6 months the baby sleeps in your room so maybe you would consider a lightweight Moses basket or crib, with a new mattress. You can also get a crib that attaches to the side of your bed so baby can sleep here.
Cot:
Get One with fixed side rails with no more than 2 3/8 inches between slats. If the slats are wider then your baby could get finger and other limbs stuck.
A Firm mattress that fits tightly to all sides of the cot
A Couple of Snug-fitting crib sheets that can not easily be dragged loose as your baby moves in their sleep
My Advice for bedding is:
3 washable crib mattress pads this helps prevent the mattress from getting wet.
4 fitted crib sheets the tighter the fit the better.
5 soft, light blankets
2 heavier blankets for when it gets colder at night.
It is also advised to have a room thermometer to regulate the temperature so that it is not too hot or cold
.
A Rocking chair or armchair is great when feeding but not essential.
A Baby monitor with sound and visuals is essential if you are leaving your baby alone asleep when you are elsewhere in the house.
A Nightlight although not essential helps calm a newborn as does a colourful mobile.
A Dresser where baby's clothes can be stored. I would advise getting a dresser that has a changing top.
A Toy basket is essential as no doubt you will get given toys and you will need storage.
Essential Products For Newborn Babies: Going Out And About
As bonding is very important for newborn baby's, it is suggested to purchase a Baby carrier, sling, or wrap. Having a baby sling means that you can be hands-free to play with any other children you have, make dinner, catch up on email, or go shopping.
A comfortable and safe Baby swing seat will allow you to set the baby down so you can do other things.
A Stroller, pushchair or pram is needed to take the baby outside for walks again there are numerous styles, models and you can even get double strollers if needed.
A Dummy If you use one to soothe your newborn, choose a one-piece model because two-piece dummies are a choking hazard. Do not just buy one off the shelf as they come with differently shaped teets depending on your baby's age. They are a good way to calming down your baby.
Depending on the time of the year you may also want to purchase
- a rain cover
- a furry foot-muff (for winter months).
- a parasol.
Essential baby clothes and blankets.
This is another area where people can easily go over the top. There is no need to buy too many newborn clothes. Remember that your baby will grow out of them faster than you think.
What you will need:
Six to eight baby grows, a mix of short and long-sleeved. This will depend largely on what time of the year your baby is born.
This will also affect whether you need hats, mittens and scarfs.
Six sleeping suits.
Anti Scratch Mittens.
A Couple of pairs of socks.
A fleece suit for a winter baby.
1-3 hats A broad-brimmed for a summer baby, or a soft cap that covers ears for a winter baby.
2 or 3 sweaters or jackets remember they should be front buttoning. Pullover sweaters are difficult and not recommended at such a young age.
Three to four swaddling blankets.
One or two lightweight blankets.
Of course, you will want to but pretty outfits as well but do not buy too many. Remember your family will be buying loads of things as well.
Some products you may not want to waste money on:
Diaper disposal systems. The issue with these is that when you dispose of them the smell is horrendous.
Shoes. Yes, you may think your baby will look good in shoes but your baby's not walking yet.
Other items you will not need till your baby is mobile are:
- stair gates and playpens.
- Also smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Other safety items like plug socket covers, cupboard and window locks.
- Even furniture corner protectors.
- Of course fireguards.
Remember: The basics will keep your baby happy and healthy, do not go overboard.
