Choosing a baby carrier
Choosing the right baby carrier is a difficult choice. You need to make sure it is comfortable, easy to put on yourself and flexible for your little one. It is a great way to nurture your little one as they are snuggled up to you. Wearing a carrier allows you to have free hands and so you can continue doing other things.
Types of baby carrier
Under 5 months it is best to use baby pouches, baby slings or baby wraps. As they have no neck support any movement in an upright baby carrier will put pressure on their neck. When your baby has gained good neck control and can sit well unassisted, they would be more suited to upright carriers
Baby Carriers Are Designed to suit different babies
Choosing a baby carrier based solely on their age is not the best method. Check the weight limit for each type of baby carrier. As each carrier is designed to be balanced for babies of a certain size.
A sling is a wide piece of materials that is worn across your body and over one shoulder. You can get them padded or not padded, and you can also have a choice of getting an adjustable one.
A wrap is made of stretch material that cuddles your baby against your chest. These are supported to your body by a series of straps that hold it securely. Wraps are suitable for younger babies (3-8kg), they are worn around your body and over both shoulders. They are adjustable and can be worn in a variety of ways. They also will make breastfeeding easy. The only problem that people refer to is the fact that wraps can be time to put on and take off, and are often confusing. Again they can become uncomfortable.
There are woven wraps that can be worn on the front and back. These are made from natural materials like wool, cotton and even bamboo. These again are suitable for younger babies.
Mei Tais are traditional designs they have straps which tie around the waist and over the shoulders.
Soft-Structured Carriers are wide-based carriers that support the baby's hips in the recommended M position and are suitable from birth to toddler age. These give you more options as they can be used for front, hip and back carrying They have adjustable straps that can be altered to fit the parent easily and quickly.
If you have twins then you can always carry one baby and your partner the other one. There are options of twin carriers which are designed to be worn with one baby on the front and one on the back.
Forward facing baby carriers are often a favourite choice. They allow the baby to look around. However, use these only for a short time as your baby may get overstimulated. The other issue here is that your baby has no eye contact with you so you can not tell how he/she feels. These carriers have two shoulder straps that support a fabric seat. The carrier is worn very close to your chest. At first, your newborn will face inward, but as your baby gets good head control it can face forwards. Many carriers can also be used on your back when you baby gets heavier.
What to look for when buying a baby carrier
I suggest trying different types as you will feel more comfortable in some than others. Some parents prefer using a sling or wrap for their baby and later on a structured carrier. Many carriers are designed to grow with your child from birth to toddler.
The carrier has to be comfortable for you and your baby. Choose one with wide, well-padded straps these will alleviate the pressure on your shoulders. Also having a supportive fabric will distribute your baby's weight evenly and save you from an unnecessary shoulder, neck, or upper back strain. Another consideration is will you be the only one carrying the baby. If not then you will need an adjustable carrier.
To make your baby as comfortable as possible look for a carrier that has padded leg holes that are not tight on your baby's legs. A padded headrest is also advisable to support your babies head and neck.
Make sure the seat and straps will support your baby securely and that all buckles, straps and belts are working.
Remember this is important as there will be many occasions when you are alone with your baby.
Baby Carrier Advice
If you want to breastfeed then as mentioned slings and wraps are the best options.
Depending on the time of year and how long you intend to use the carrier make sure it will not make your baby too hot or cold. It needs to be made of a strong material but not too thick.
- Check on your baby often if using a sling to make sure that he/she is not lying chin-to-chest and their face isn't pressed up against the fabric or you. This can lead to suffocation.
- Make sure you can see your baby's face or eyes in the sling and that your baby can see you.
