It will take some practice before you learn how to snag a great ski video on your action cam. You should expect to record your epic bails as well as your heroics (and some antics too) as you learn the ropes. Here are a few tips and tricks that might help you reduce the learning curve.
To Slo-Mo or Not to Slo-Mo
There are times when taking a slow motion shot will work wonders and there are times when it just doesnt work. Of course you need the right equipment to get the job done.
That is why we recommend some of the higher end action cams like the GoPro Hero6 and later. Your action cam should be able to shoot footage at 1080p videos at 240 frames per second at least.
With that camera, slow things down to 10x and some of your shots will look amazing. However, dont do slow motion if youre doing POV shots. It just wont work. Have one of your ski buddies take the shot and do it on slo-mo. Another great way to do it is to use a selfie stick.
Helmet Mount vs. Chest Mount
When choosing between a helmet mount and a chest mount for your ski video it is recommended that you use a chest mount. It is definitely a lot more stable than having a camera mounted on your head.
However, in case you insist on a helmet mount, then here are a few ideas. First off, you will need a fat frame. That means you should shoot your footage in wide mode.
Note that you should have your stabilization turned on expect to get more vibration on the head than on the chest as it would seem. With the action cam mounted on your helmet, you should shoot at 1080p and at 60 frames per second.
The chest mount on the other hand puts your skis, poles, and your hands into frame, which is really cool. This is also a good option in case you decide to move to filming footage on a snow bike or maybe a snow mobile but thats a subject for another day.
It is not recommended for a snowboard POV shot they usually turn out as rubbish. Now, when filming your ski video set your action cam on SuperView mode. That way the top and the bottom of the frame will be filled.
When to Go 4K
Best practice dictates that you should use 4K on your GoPro sparingly. Why? When you switch to 4K mode, sure you get stunning footage, but it will eat up a lot of space on your storage and of course it will drain the juice out of your batteries fast.
If you insist on going 4K all the way, then carry extra batteries and bring several SD cards along. You most likely will be filming 4K video at 60 frames per second. Its great for really detailed shots and panning shots where you can also feature the horizon along with your tricks.
