Lighting in winter is dark and overcast due to the limited number of daylight hours. The sun rises and sets low giving up to shadows and faint brightness over the freezing temperatures.
GoPro ski cameras don't work well in shadowy sceneries and would affect your skis video quality. If you want to improve the illumination of your footages, then here are the things you need to do.
Set your ISO higher
ISO captures light by making the camera sensitive to every bright source it sees. To get the most desirable outcome, set your ISO to no more than 1600.
The higher you set your ISO, the more grainy and pixilated the video output will be. You can also simply improve the lighting during the editing phase.
Use 24 or 30 fps video footage
You can adjust your frames per second in your GoPro ski camera to let the light reach the sensor. The higher the frame rate, the darker your ski clips will be because a fast shutter speed would mean less light coming through the camera lens.
Most GoPro cameras shoot from 24 to 240 fps. You can try each fps setting and compare the lighting difference from a between every fps feature.
However, that would also mean putting a limit to slow-motion ski video footages because it'll end up with low light.
Widen the aperture
A big or wide aperture would let the light pass through the sensors and brighten your video. Take note that the smaller rate will bring enough brightness to the footage.
For example, an f/2.8 aperture setting will provide you a brighter video than an f/4 can. It's already a good thing that your ski GoPro cam comes in a fixed f/2.8 lens to combat low light situations.
Low Light mode
GoPro cameras have fixed features that let the camera automatically adjust its settings according to the light conditions. For example, you set your fps to 120 only to find the camera adjusting it to 30fps.
The low light settings alter the frames or increase the ISO only since the aperture lens is fixed at exactly f/2.8. This smart technology allows you to shoot of the scenery without having to worry about the lighting.
Find and position according to the light source
Avoid shadow-filled places like the forest where your source of light can be blocked. Remain out in the clearing or trail where there's a bright, but overcast light good for shooting.
If the sun is out, make sure it's behind you or at your side to illuminate the footage. Also, it's best to play with the natural surroundings and see where you can shoot your crazy ski video with the best lighting.
Use correct effects
Applying effects or color correction improve the lighting conditions of your footage. Most skiers prefer this over adjusting the camera because they can alter the brightness of the video without tarnishing the raw clip.
Only use fitting effects at a minimum. Too much filters on the clip may cause it to become grainy.
Though winter brings gloomy clouds hovering in the skies, it has never stopped ski crazed enthusiasts from filming their ski adventures. Keep these tips in mind to get the most of your GoPro camera.
