When you have a low credit score and you dont know why, it is time to do a closer inspection and a more thorough examination of your credit reports. Unfortunately, these documents are not all that easy to go through. It could take you hours, or days even, to read all the entries in the reports. There could be entries that are unnecessarily pulling your scores down. Your mission is to spot these errors and other items that are not supposed to appear in any of your reports. You can do this yourself or you can hire someone who has the expertise in doing credit repair to help you through the process.
Your Consumer Rights
Your financial behavior as a consumer is recorded and reported to the three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Your credit score, also called the FICO score, is based on the items that appear in these reports. Your score affects your ability to avail of consumer financial products and services. Recently, the relevance of your score has even extended to your employment prospects and your chances of being considered as a desirable tenant.
Given its impact on your life, the law recognizes your need to protect your financial reputation. It mandates that the items in the reports should abide by specific standards. This means that you are well within your rights to file a dispute in case you see items that are unduly affecting your score.
Your Credit Repair Watchlist
You are entitled to free copies of your credit reports once a year. You can request for them online through the annualcreditreport.com website. Once you receive your copies, go through each one with a fine-toothed comb and look for the following:
1. Erroneous personal information this would include your name, residence address, date of birth, and social security number among others. These do not necessarily have an impact on your credit score, but they are important nonetheless. You wont have accurate credit reports if your personal details on record do not match the details that appear in your consumer finance transactions.
2. Inaccurate account entries this is one of the most common errors that people find in their credit reports. These could be items that are not supposed to be in the reports anymore, transactions that were entered into by people with the same name as yours, and accounts that should been transferred to another classification under bankruptcy or divorce agreements among others.
3. Irrelevant entries these are entries that are past their statute of limitations. Paid tax liens, for instance, should not be included anymore in the credit reports seven years after the payment was made. Accounts declared for Chapter 7 and 13 Bankruptcy also have specific retention periods to be followed by the credit reporting agencies. Generally, negative items stay in the credit reports for a period of 7 to 10 years.
4. Fraudulent activity somebody else could be using your identity and entering into fraudulent financial transactions. This is a case of identity theft and, more than your ability to borrow money, your name could be implicated in criminal activities. Any entry for an activity that you did not do should be a red flag and should be disputed right away with the credit reporting bureau and with the creditor or reporting institution.
Credit repair is a time consuming and tedious process, but it is a process that you will have to go through if you want to improve your quality of life. It cannot be stressed enough how stifling having a low credit score can be. To guide you through the entire process of fixing your credit situation, hire a credit fixer with the right experience and track record in helping consumers wipe their slates clean.
