The Lord's Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer is one of the best tools for us to get an instant connection with our Lord Jesus Christ. This is also a good way for us to express our faith, love, and devotion to God. In addition, prayer can help us in everything that we are doing in life.
Whether you are dealing with a big difficulty, depression, happiness, and gratefulness, we always consider praying to ask for guidance, blessings, and forgiveness. As Christians, we should always make this practice as part of our lifestyle most especially to pray the Lord's prayer because this is the most powerful prayer of all time.
The Lord's Prayer (Our Father), is being taught and used by different organizations, services, schools, and many other spiritual individuals. As a matter of fact, many people are considering this prayer as a good example of how we should properly pray and connect with God.
According to Luke 11:1-4, "Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." 2 And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation."
As you can see, Jesus uses the Lord's Prayer as a way of expressing our being and how we can praise and glorify His name according to what is right and just. In addition, this prayer is also helping us on how we can properly ask for guidance, blessing, and forgiveness to God.
With that being said, let's discuss each of the lines to fully understand the meaning of the Lord's Prayer.
1. Our Father, Who art in heaven
This line is about our core religious belief to our God. It is also telling us that we should not isolate other people and consider everyone as God's children by means of saying Our Father and not as My Father.
2. Hallowed be Thy Name
This line is simply showing or teaching us that we should all sanctify His name and recognize Him as the holiest power.
3. Thy Kingdom come
This line has two meanings. First, we are taught to ask for the God's kingdom to help us and encircle us with love, goodness, and honesty in our daily living. And the second meaning is to ask God to fulfill His promise of returning and granting us the eternal life.
4. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven
This line is allowing us to ask for God's help and guidance for us to do good deeds regardless of our condition or situation.
5. Give us this day our daily bread
This line is about asking for God's continuous help for us to survive the whole day. Nourishment, clothes, including the needs of our soul which is the Eucharist.
6. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us
This line is very strong because we are asking Him to forgive us for all our wrongdoing while asking Him as well to help us to forgive those who have hurt us. Jesus included this line because we have to forgive others first so that our hearts will be filled with God's love and forgiveness.
7. And lead us not into temptation
This line is obviously about asking God's help when we are facing a temptation. We are praying that God will help to resist the temptation and have a deeper faith and determination to fight these sins.
8. But deliver us from evil
This line means that we should always ask for God's guidance every time we think of doing a sin or tasting the temptation that is always being given by the devil. We are praying that God will shield us and protect us every single time that you feel like the devil is asking you to go and drive the wrong path.
We should always guarantee that we will say the Lord's Prayer every day because the composition of this prayer is very well-rounded for us to get a stronger and deeper faith in all His deeds and words.
