Going through life is like traveling down a road. The road might be long. It might be short. It might be smooth or rocky; crooked or straight; narrow or a wide one, which we'll end up traveling throughout our life.
Some roads will lead to a life of single blessedness, marriage or even a religious vocation. Some roads take us to fame and forture or end in isolation and poverty. We might travel a road to happiness or sadness, a road that leads us towards victory and jubliation or defeat and disappointment.
No road in life is ever without corners, detours or crossroads. One of the most perplexing roads you can face is when you reach a crossroad. With four roads to choose from and with limited knowledge on where they would go, how do you make a decision on which road to take?
What kind of guarantee is there that we would choose the right one along the way?
Would you take any road, or just stand and stay there right there in front of the crossroad?
The answer is really simple .. just as in life, there are no guarantees.
There is no way of knowing where a road will lead you until you take it. It's one of the most powerful things to realize about life.
Nobody has said that choosing the right thing all the time is the road to happiness.
Loving someone with all your heart doesn't guarantee that it will be returned.
Gaining fame and fortune isn't always the recipe for guaranteed happinesss.
Accepting a good word from an influential superior to cut your climb up the career ladder is not always bad but doesn't guarantee an easy climb even if you are highly qualified and competent.
There are so many possible outcomes, which you really cannot control.
The only power you really have is over the decisions you will make and how you will act and react to the different situations.
If we make a wrong decision: We become aware of it .. only after the fact.
If you had known ahead of time that the decisions you were making wouldn't work out, would you have gone through with it? Perhaps not .. after all, why would you choose a certain path when you knew upfront that you'd get lost along the way?
Seriously, think about it ... why would you make a decision if you knew the results wouldn't be the right ones?
The reality is, it's only after you make a decision and you've had time to reflect on it, that you realize whether it's sound or not. If the consequences or outcomes are good, you know you made the right choice. Otherwise, you know your choice wasn't the best one.
Take the risk: It's decision time.
With no guarantees being offered in life and since you will never know if the decision is right or wrong until you actually make it, you might as well take the risk and decide.
It's better than being in limbo land, don't you think?
Sure, it's true, it might just be a wrong turn and you could get you lost but it also might become a fantastic adventure and open up so many more roads. It's all in your perspective and your choice. You can look at it, as if you were a lost traveler or that you're an adventurous tourist of life.
However, that doesn't mean you should make decisions haphazardly. Taking risks is not about being careless and foolish.
Here's some pointers to help you choose wisely when you're faced with life's crossroads:
Get as many information as you can about your situation.
If you don't have all the information about what you are facing, it's hard to make a decision with confidence. Use what any news reporter does: Ask the 5 W's – What, Who, When, Where and Why.
What is the situation?
Who are the people involved?
When did this happen?
Where is this leading?
Why are you in this situation?
These are just some example questions to ask yourself so you get a clearer understanding of your situation.
It's important. The reason for indecision is often tied into the lack of information about a situation.
Identify and create options.
When you look at the situation, what options come up? Sometimes the options are limited but depending on the circumstances, there can be numerous ones to choose from.
But what do you do if you think the situation offers absolutely no options?
It's time to get those creative juices flowing! Crank up your creative mind! Consider all your ideas, from the most simplistic to the most complicated ones. Write them all down. Don't dismiss any that come to mind. The most outrageous idea could actually proved to exactly what you need.
Ask a friend to help you identify good options and even brainstorm with you to develop more options if you get stuck.
But remember, the final decision on what you do .. is totally up to you!
Always consider the pros and cons of each option
Take all the options you wrote down and make a list on a piece of paper. Next to the list make two columns, label them: Disadvantages | Advantages. Now go through the list and in each column, write out the disadvantages and/or advantages of each option. This way you'll get clear insights into the consequences of each option.
Now for the scary part – Trust yourself and make that decision.
Now that you've gone through the options, listed out the advantages and disadvantages, here comes the scary part: it's time to make a decision. Yes ... it can be scary. But with the trust and faith you have in yourself, it will make it easier to make the best decision with the information you have on hand.
No, there aren't any guarantees but remember, decisions that don't work out, are one of the best ways we learn.
So gulp and take the leap, choose the option that best fits the situation and make your decision.
So you've made the decision. Are you feeling a sense of relief? I bet you are! The hardest part is always taking that initial step.
What's left?
Be willing to face the consequences, which is always easier when things work out as planned. If they don't work out the way you had hoped, step back, take a breath and look at what happened, how you can change things or the direction and try again.
The greatest gift: You've just given yourself permission to live your life instead of remaining a passive bystander on the outside looking in.
Even though you won't know if it's the best decision you've ever made or whether it wasn't, only time can tell.
Don't regret your decision. If it doesn't work out, learn from it and if it does, celebrate. Better yet, celebrate both, because in the end you've grown either way!
